Qantas have just released latest guidance on the impact of Coronavirus

To be phased in from the end of March 2020 onwards:

  • Total Group International capacity will be cut by around 90 per cent until at least the end of May 2020. This is up from a 23 per cent reduction for the fourth quarter of FY20 announced last week and largely reflects the demand impact of severe quarantine requirements on people’s ability to travel overseas.
  • Total Group Domestic capacity will be cut by around 60 per cent until at least the end of May 2020. This is a major increase from the 5 per cent reduction for the fourth quarter of FY20 and reflects a rapid decline in forward travel demand due to government containment measures, corporate travel bans and a general pullback from everyday activities across the community.
  • This represents the grounding of around 150 aircraft, including almost all of the Group’s wide-body fleet.
  • Previously announced cuts in place from end-May through to mid-September remain in place and are likely to be increased, depending on demand.
The route-by-route detail of these changes across Qantas and Jetstar is currently being worked through and will be announced in coming days.

good to see the business on the front foot. they don't have much choice without passengers.

a bit of similar aviation story could be Boeing continuing to build 737-Max even though they could no tbe sold.

As a result of significant falls in travel demand due to Coronavirus, and new government restrictions across multiple jurisdictions in recent days, Qantas and Jetstar will make further and much larger cuts to domestic and international flying schedules.

While it’s tempting to think they’ll use the time to refurbish the A380s, I suspect reality is they’re pulling out all the stops to cut costs and save the furniture.

I need SCs to attain Platinum before 31 May and to that end have booked a number of SYD-AKL-SYD flights in May. If Qantas cancel my flights and I can’t fly until after May will Qantas honour ORC?

No, you need to fly.

AFAIK ORC is only when you’re involuntarily rerouted or downgrades, not altogether stopped from flying. You might have to do what I’ve done, changed to vouchers and the DSC should stick for when you can rebook. I had a few AKL runs which I’ve cancelled and expect QF to cancel the rest for me shortly.

My problem is that I need the SCs before 31 May.
Our year ends in April and just now had to cancel to a voucher the flight that would have requal'ed tonight. I gave up trying to requal when I could see this virus thing was going to stop me travelling anyway.

As things start to settle what we might see is a blanket extension to status to accommodate the lost opportunity to travel at the moment. Hotel loyalty programs are already starting to do this. Makes good business sense when “normal” can return.

OOL/SYD/MEL both flights 11/12 in Business. SYD/MEL about 20 maybe in Exonomy!

90% to international?

I'm going to guess all that's going to run is a token 3-4 weekly SYD-LAX, SYD-HND, and PER-LHR with 787s and 3-4 daily AU-NZ.
grounding of the 747s, A380s, the JQ 788s, half the 789s and any A330s not used for domestic.

I wonder if QF knew in advance of the ban of travel to the EU and Schengen zone: that cuts a huge chunk of their international travel.

You would think that would be the most likely outcome, further announcements might be forthcoming but the real test will be which aircraft start to turn up in which desert (California or Alice Springs).

Meanwhile rumours are about that QF have seen a massive uptick in bookings to 'safehaven' Tasmania...

Honestly.... lets go with assuming this is true for fun, would QF upgauge / increase frequency to Tassie or would that be too political.
