Hi members, please enlighten me with your infinite wisdom:

I understand that Qantas has a policy that luggage will be carried to the final destination, despite having separate PNR/booking, as long as the connecting carriers are all Qantas.

Destination is MEL - SYD in one booking, and SYD - KIX in another booking.

I rang Qantas three times, and guess what, three different responses each time:

1) No, you must pick up the luggage at Sydney Airport and check-in again.
2) Check-in for all the bookings would be possible at Melbourne Airport, and the luggage would be carried to the final destination, but manual check-in at the counters is required.
3) Same as 2), but it is possible to do Online Check-in instead.

My gut feeling is that 2) is correct, but given the lack of consistency of the responses, I'd just like to be assured that I am correct.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

QF-QF different bookings can be done.
Just as QF-QF/JQ/EK can also be added in.

Also option 2 and 3 are correct. It will just be two flights you do online check-in for. Would make no difference in adding the 'connection' on the day of departure.

Baggage will be through checked from one QF flight to another QF flight, even if they are on separate PNRs: link

Go to a staffed check-in counter at MEL to check your bags and request your boarding pass for both MEL-SYD and SYD-KIX.

QF will check through across PNRs if going QF>QF or QF>EK.
They will only check across PNRs for other oneworld carriers if one ticket is a reward and one revenue.
Through check to other airlines will only be done on a single PNR where they have an interline agreement.

Since you are on QF MEL-SYD and connecting to QF33, they will check you through from MEL.

Gosh I wish I could explain things as well as Himeno did..

They key being your booking being on a single PNR *and* have interline arrangements with the other airlines - which is normally a given but not always. You've got separate bookings so while it's annoying you're getting conflicting answers it's probably just the 'official' answer clashing with what the airline will try to do if you ask the right question at airport itself..

Have been bitten by this in the past where we had booked legs separately and then found 'issues' with no automatic check through (but was sorted at the airport - just stressful not knowing at the time)

I have never had a problem with Qantas to Qantas. Whoever told you option 1 needs retraining.

Sorry to resurrect the thread, but does anyone have recent experience? I have a revenue BNE to SYD (Y) then award SYD to SCL (J) on separate PNRs. Both QF flight numbers and QF operated.

Both online chat and the online complaints continue to point me here -https://qantas.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6638 -and state that because Qantas is part of Oneworld, the Oneworld to Oneworld commentary applies and there is no baggage interlining. I suspect this is because there is no specific comment about QF to QF on separate PNRs in that link and therefore they default to the Oneworld position. I have provided them with the agents information link but they just state the follow the link they keep sending me.

While we have time to collect bags and get boarding passes, I don’t particularly want to if we can avoid this.

I would be very surprised if they knocked back a QF-QF check through, but either way please report back to let us know. The agency connect link is very clear on QF-QF so best take a printed copy of the page just in case.

Obviously make sure you line up at the International Connections desk rather than the usual Service Desk. (sorry to state the bleeding obvious)

Yep we are familiar with the international connections desk and it’s all worked seamlessly before - but on the one PNR. I’ll let you all know how we go.

I have never had a problem with QF to QF. We did awards CBR to SYD (Y) last year in January , then revenue Syd-SCL (J) (different PNRs) and luggage was checked through both in Canberra and coming back in Santiago, checked through to Canberra. In fact we missed our connection coming back and Qantas still put us up overnight and rebooked us the next day for the Sydney-Canberra leg.

I generally check the difference in cost of doing J out of Canberra or J from Sydney and because there are very few J domestic flights from Canberra it usually saves a few dollars to pay for J from Sydney and then award for the domestic Y bit, so I have done it often.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to confirm as QF 27 from SYD to SCL has been delayed 18 hours so there was no point checking bags through...
