We have not flown with Qantas overseas since !999.We flew with them in November to Hong Kong return.We were impressed with the service by a "mature - aged " crew.They were very professional , unlike the cheaper airlines.Any comments?

Welcome to AFF! There are many diversified opinions on this forum...I generally find QF service adequate to good, sometimes great. Extremely rarely I'll experience something substandard, but in the main, I'm happy enough with QF.

Leaving home port is generally better than the return.

I believe the term coined here for QF crews is 'consistently inconsistent'. I've had amazing QF crews, and ones that should be fired on the spot.

The lack of consistency is what drove me to VA (although these days, they're suffering too). It's a tough gig to get right, for any airline.

sprucegoose, is your hypothesis that because most QF (and VA/JQ international) international flights depart Oz in the morning around 1000 with a few in the afternoon (MEL - DXB at 1615, SYD - MNL at 1255 as two examples), QF crews are happier and 'fresher' on a day flight where they might arrive at the Australian departure airport at 0815, not having had to get up at too unsociable an hour (even though on day flights the shades may often be down) whereas on the return to Oz, many flights involve an overnight sector?

Do the crews intensely dislike the latter?

I think the term inconsistent is spot on.

You get some great staff who are passionate about their job and you want to have them on every flight.

Then there are others who clearly should be looking for another job.
