Qantas Platinum Status in 18 SYD-AKL Return Business Class Flights (Spend $14,000)?

According to the Qantas points calculator, you get 40 status credits for a one way SYD-AKL flight. So that's 80 status credits for a return flight. To get platinum status, you need 1400 status credits , so that's 18 return flights.

LAN is running a promotion where a return SYD-AKL flight is $777 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/220548). So 18 return flights is $14,000.

Platinum One at 3600 status credits works out to be 46 return flights at $35,000. Also note that your partner get a complimentary Platinum status when you reach Platinum one.

EDIT* Edited the info to reflect accuracy. Thanks to Clazman, Incumbant, TomVexille, Dairyfloss for pointing out my errors! Mod - Maybe delete/close this thread as it's no longer good value :(

Using the QF calculator you can specify the carrier and it gives you the correct status credits.

Flying LAN SYD - Auckland only gives you 40 status so you would need 18 return flights :)

Unless the LAN flight carries a QF flight number, it will only be 40 SCs each way.

LA will only give 40SCs SYD-AKL unless you book with a QF flight number

Firstly - just a warning that I'm not a pro at points or status, so to the more experienced travellers - feel free to correct me if I get any of this wrong.

According to the Qantas points calculator, you get 80 status credits for a one way SYD-AKL flight. So that's 160 status credits for a return flight. To get platinum status, you need 1400 status credits , so that's 9 return flights. Does this also apply to other OneWorld partner airlines as well?

The reason I ask is that I noticed that LAN is running a promotion where a return SYD-AKL flight is $777 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/220548). So 9 return flights is $6,993, which I think is quite worth it for Platinum Status.

Platinum One at 3600 status credits works out to be 23 return flights at $17,871. Also note that your partner get a complimentary Platinum status when you reach Platinum one.

I don't travel enough to do something as left-field as this, but maybe this will help someone out?

Hi Johnstone - I'm afraid that the LAN flights will net you only 50% of what the QF SCs are for this route, so you'd need to do twice as many flights & spend twice as much as you are suggesting to hit either status level... sorry! See the Earning Points and Status Credits calculator, where you can also choose the airline you would fly with.

Cheers,
Matt.

You would also need the four ~ to earn any status and 2700SC of QF travel to get P1.

Paging the Pooch (gotta get a F lounge mention in!)

Yes, much more effective to do it on the ~$600ish o.w. return sale fares, or a combination of one way J, one way F (ex-AKL) codeshare EK. 200 SC's for ~$1400 and qualify as QF~ (booked QF codeshare).

So you'd need 7 of these.

but my question is.. WHY?

there are cheaper ways (eg: in the USA) to attain SC hauls, and if only was ONLY to fly status runs (eg: multiple oz-NZ r/t trips) what's the point? a shiny card to use on more status runs? I mean surely other flying for reasons other than status would be included yes?
