I'm a Qantas Platinum frequent flyer, and I'm keen to retain my status (obviously!), but I'm in danger of falling slightly short (~35 status credits), given the amount of travel I've got coming up between now and my cutoff date (31 August)...

I've got an LA trip coming up in 2 weeks, and I'm thinking of upgrading one of the sectors to Premium Economy with points... if I do this, will I get the extra status credits for that sector? As it is, it's a discount economy sector (45 status credits), but it's worth 90 status credits as a legit Premium Economy sector, which will cover my potential shortfall.

But will I get those extra status credits if I upgrade the sector on points?

Sorry no, your status credits are based on the original booking class

Thanks for the replies... what way would I have to do the upgrade in order to get the higher status credits?

Haha yep I figured that, but there's no option in my FF account to upgrade with anything other than points... I guess it'd be an over-the-phone thing?

Possibly, but you need to change the fare to the higher fare, so you may have to call up and pay for it.

There will more than likely be change fees and fare difference to upgrade a discount premium economy airfare.

You can't do the extra flights to get to Platinum? Where are you based?

Based in Sydney... my time is super limited between now & the cutoff date, I've got a bunch of flights already booked between now & then as discount economy fares across the board and there's no opportunity to do extra sectors really, so upgrading the ones I've already got booked is the best option

Do you have spare time in LA, there can be some cheap options at times overseas to get SCs. The other consideration is how much did you go over the mark last year, as often the excess is counted in the next year unofficially.
