A QANTAS jet and an Emirates jumbo with a total of 443 people on board were on a collision course over Mildura when warning systems failed.

The Qantas 737 was heading from Sydney to Adelaide while the Emirates jumbo left Melbourne for Singapore.


They were flying at the same altitude and their flight paths were due to intersect when a warning system sounded at air traffic control in Melbourne.


But a newly trained controller's two calls to the Emirates 777 to change course were "not clear".
The controller also failed to focus enough attention on the potential disaster as the aircraft continued on their courses.


The air traffic controller eventually directed the Qantas 737 pilot to climb in altitude and turn away to avoid collision.


By that time, the distance between the two planes was just 6.7km - below the minimum 9.3km required.






When did 777's become a jumbo? They don't say this until halfway through the article: The near miss on September 3 last year was investigated by the Air Transport Safety Bureau.
 
OK so the ATC officers call was not clear enough,why not just run the story with a "Jets were on collision course" headline without mentioning Qantas ?.(In the headline)
Answer:Because that wouldn't fit the plan to find any single item that may reflect badly on QF and run banner headlines about them.
This is about the training of ATC officers IMO-not about QF (Or indeed Emirates for that matter)

Indeed. But that wouldn't sell papers. I'm actually surprised Steve Purvinas (ALAEA) hasn't popped up and made his usual rubbish comments about overseas maintenance causing the issue.

Of course people interested in the actual issue should refer to the Investigation report:

The air traffic controller responsible for separation of the aircraft had recently completed the air navigation service provider's approved training, but had not recognised the potential conflict between the two aircraft.

Just the facts there. None of the usual NoNews blubbering.

SHould be - but TCAS is a last resort.

As far as News stories go, this one doesn't seem so bad.

So it's been over a year since this incident happened. Facts or not, surely if it was that newsworthy we would have read about it at the time which was over 14 months ago.

Oh wait a second, now QF have announced that the A380's are to resume flying again, better find another excuse to sh!tcan Skippy! :evil:
 
The ATSB report into the incident came out yesterday, hence the newspaper reports.
 
Are QF aircraft TCAS equipped?
According to the report the QF crew had the conflicting aircraft on their TCAS, heard the contoller's (unanswered) calls and were well aware of the situation.
