Qantas In-flight Entertainment

I flew from Sydney to Shanghai about a week ago on QF129. At check in, passengers were advised that due to a computer problem, there would be no in-flight entertainment. We were given a $30 voucher as compensation. This is the 3rd time I have experienced this problem with Qantas (other 2 were from LA to Sydney), but the first time I received a voucher. Luckily when it was voted the world's best in-flight entertainment, the judges weren't on QF 129. I am not an expert, but surely the computer could have been repaired or replaced.

Not easy to fix, it even takes hours of ground time to upload the new movies each month. It must be a difficult system to work with. I think Qantas have ditched the Rockwell Colins gear in the A380/B787 for the panasonic X2.

The A330's systems also generally have less issues than the 747's so i would say more you bad luck i am afraid.

Qantas has had years of issues with their AVOD (often referred to as AVOiD ) They have managed to iron out quite a few bugs in the system though and it has become a lot more stable and is more likely to last the flight. (Remember though to never keep pressing multiple buttons straight after each other. This can crash the system for you and your seatmate)

The rumour I hear often is that the system was not designed for the use Qantas is using it for and at times just can't handle the load of traffic. It's kinda like racing a canoe in the Sydney to Hobart race and expecting it to last the distance

On the positive side, Qantas have been reasonably good in providing compensation for the non-working AVOD. The compensation I hear of has been all over the place ranging from $30 to $300 or so (travel vouchers, duty free vouchers or cash), providing other goods in kind (eg movie passes or DVD's) or not providing compensation at all. Sometimes the compensation has been totally unprompted. Your Frequent Flyer Status and class of travel may have a bearing on the types of compensation Qantas wants to offer.

As mentioned earlier, Qantas is dropping this particular brand of system in their newer planes and going for a different manufacturer. This should improve the quality greatly.

On our two flights so far AVOD has worked perfectly. In Y and in Business.

My 76 year old mother is going over to the UK in July, and is an absolute technology illiterate . (I have lost count how many times I explained the internet)

I pity the cabin crew or person/s sitting next to her. They will have to explain everything 20 times and it still won't make any difference.

She might stand a chance if they up her to Business and she can use the touch screens.

Generally the entertainment does work well, its not often i have had issues and i fly a reasonable amount on QF. Sometimes it just life.... like the 3 months in a row i flew on the 1st-3rd of the month and the new movies not loaded so the guide did not match the AVOD.

Thats annoying but hardware the end of the world since it gave me something to watch next trip.

Ever since i had to do LHR-SIN without AVOD (helpful staff gave me $100 worth of Duty free vouchers) the ipod is always loaded with videos for anything over 4 hours. Plus a sleeping pill helps the hours pass quicker.

Still am looking forward to something like the new systems on SQ. Havent flown them as yet but from the advertising and hearing from peple that have they seem to be a giant leap forward.

Bring on the newer flying metal I say.

Happy to be corrected by anybody but i believe the new SQ systems are also Panasonic x2 , same as QF will use in there new AC.

But for sure bring on the new metal and composites

And AA has been installing RockWell Collins entertainment into their refurb'd 777's. Suprisingly enough, pax are now reporting issues with AA entertainment on the new refurb'd planes... From what I read, it's almost like the Qantas story being replayed!
