I'm looking to book an open jaw (MEL-LHR, FCO-MEL) or, alternatively, return (MEL-LHR-MEL) flight with QF roughly 5 July - 20 Sept this year. I've been keeping an eye on the sales and it seems like nothing has come up for flights to Europe in the last few months - for those dates, anyway! Is it time to bite the bullet and just book, or is there a chance a sale will come up in the next couple of months? I'm probably looking at Y or Y+ fares.

Thanks!

Tell him he's dreamin'

I think peak Europe dates are in July-Aug so that will likely be blocked out anyway...

If a sale were to come up for around July, chances are it still won't be all that cheap given not only peak Europe season but also School Holidays down under. But I would not be relying on anything on that front.

You could look at Finnair as they recently published some sales fares and will give you the same MEL-LHR/FCO-MEL open-jaw options with either Y "Comfort seat" for extra leg room, or J for a little more than QF Y+.

The places to fly to Europe are out of the likes of HKG,SIN,BKK on other OW airlines, be it using points or cash.

Can you expand on what you mean for the sake of a newbie international flyer? Just had a look and MEL-BKK-LHR/FCO-BKK-MEL is more expensive than my original itinerary, SIN way more expensive and it couldn't find any options for HKG... do you mean that there might be a sale out of those cities?

You might look at prices from SIN with UL (SriLankan) from SIN via LHR in business and on to European destinations with BA in Club Europe or with assorted LCC carriers, or with AY (Finnair) from BKK, you can get some very cheap flights in business with AY via HEL to many European destinations (all in business). I flew JQ in business from MEL to BKK and then on with AY (on a different ticket) to HEL and on to LHR return for less than QF Premium Economy last year. Any ticket to Europe originating from Australia is always going to be expensive. Pick SIN, BKK or HKG as your departure point. I believe flying from Indonesia with Garuda to LHR or via Vietnam is also good value if OneWorld alliances/points/status credits aren't important. Bear in mind some of these alternatives involve a night in BKK etc. but I find even including hotel night cost is still worth it, might even be a bonus!

Thank you! Currently looking into Finnair options. Might be a bit beyond my price range but would be amazing to travel in J! Cheers for the help, all!

Also worth trying getting to Bangkok or coughet with Scoot or something and then picking up an MH business promo fare from BKK to Europe.
Yes it means backtracking to KUL but the fares are cheap from Thailand and it is OW.
