regularly fly to NZ for work ex TUL/MEL on Jetstar and can access the QF Intl Business Lounge once passing through customs (3 hour check in).

This time I am flying QF from HBA to SYD and connecting QF 161 to Wellington (Economy, Silver Status).

Will have a substantial seven hour layover in Sydney. Do I have to wait 3 hours for the Wellington flight to open in the domestic lounge, and then transfer through immigration to Intl Business or will they check in me in to all flights in HBA...so I can go through immigration in the International Terminal earlier?

And I assume luggage will go through unaided on Q-tags?

And any tips on upgrades other than bidding? There are reward business seats still available...best to try in the Business Lounge or at initial checkin at Hobart first?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If your flights are on one ticket then you will be able to check your bags all the way through.

However, your Q tags are only usable for domestic flights, therefore you will need to get the normal sticker wraps on your bags.

If asking for a points upgrade your request should've been submitted when you purchased the ticket. And check the box to enable upgrades to the gate.

They will be able to tag your bags all the way through in HBA. Also issue boarding passes for the both flights. (Take the Q tags off your bags for international flights.)

When you get to SYD, go to the international transfer bus at gate 15 and head across (your luggage will be transferred automatically).

Then straight through Immigration and into the lounge in SYD. Seven hours is a fair wait, though ......

It is! but given my work situation it made sense to get the first flight out of Hobart, get to a lounge (any lounge!) and work remotely then catch the Wellington leg. Thanks for letting me know about the Q tags too! HBA QF Lounge staff are always very helpful and recognise me but I was just trying to map out my day a bit and apart from the Intl Bus Lounge being far more comfortable, the sooner I'm checked in and through Immigration the easier I'll find it to relax. The trip is for family reasons that are causing me anxieties as it stands, and I forgot that even though I know my way around SYD that because I have always left for o/s from Tullamarine in the last 15 years that it would be a completely different arrangement.

Much appreciated.

Thanks for this. It was a rushed purchase on sale (literally as the clock hit midnight) for family reasons and I forgot about upgrades. I will try my luck in the week before and at the desk in HBA...advice all very much appreciated.
