After the turmoil yesterday about the grounding, I am starting to think about cancel my flight due in next month to HKG and change it to another airline.
Because of the fare type of my booking, no refund is allowed but a voucher will be given at the same credit as the ticket.

I logged into the Qantas website booking online, clicked the cancel button, and what it told me is my voucher "valid until 19 August 2012. ", i guess that's the 12 months after my initial booking date.
So now my question is, is this validity means that you need to use the voucher to book another flight:
1. the ticket booking date of the flight is before the date above, OR
2. the departure date/arrival date need to before that date.

These two makes a huge difference to me as I will fly out next October, and if that voucher is only valid for the flight date but not the booking date, then I guess I have to seek another opportunity to use this voucher which is not desirable.

I suppose there are many seasoned flier here so I should be able to get an answer far quicker than the hot 131313 now?

BTW, while doing all this, I have another thought regarding the cancel/change mechanism here:
The condition for my thought is based on what I have seen from the website that it appears there is no fee if you cancel your booking online.
So that, I can then re-use this voucher to book any flight I wish with same/higher fare.
However, if you change your flight's date directly online, you need to pay 80AUD per person to change.
So, if I just simply cancel it and use the voucher to rebook, it gonna save money for the change fees?

To answer 2 of your questions, firstly, the voucher must be used before it expires and can be used for travel departing within the next 12 months, which incidentally is the how far in advance you can book any travel with any airline.

Secondly, when you put the voucher into credit online, there is no financial penalty, and the total value goes into credit. HOWEVER, when you try to use the credit, any fees that applied to the original fare that the voucher came from will be applied to the new purchase.
