Hi all,

I am flying from Sydney to Perth in Business class in a weeks time and wanted to check that I could take 3 bags (instead of my normal 2 when I fly on Economy using Qantas Club).

Having looked at the Qantas website it now seems that they will only allow 30kg total (no limit on pieces) - does that sound right to you all or have I *hopefully* misunderstood something?

I flew Syd - Per - Syd return in Economy two weeks ago and my husband and I took two bags each - is this also not the case any more? If so, i'm assuming these changes must be very recent?

Thanks in advance for any clarification you may have for me.

The website is correct

The businesss class baggage allowance is now 30Kg total per person; no restriction on number of pieces as long as the weight does not exceed this limit

Economy allowance is 23 Kg , again with no limit on number of pieces

As a QP member, I believe there is an extra allowance:

Qantas Club members continue to receive one extra piece on the USA routes and an additional 10kg (22lb) allowance on all other routes.

Indeed. there is a 10Kg additional allowance on domestic travel for Qantas Club members giving the QC allowance of 33Kg for economy and 40Kg for business

I missed the word Club ... I read the comment as "when I fly on Economy using Qantas" rather than flying in economy as a Qantas Club member

I have found an issue that if upgrading, then the baggage allowance in booking does not get updated and the check in agents may charge the excess fees over the economy allowance; it does not take much effort to get this refunded if end up paying and can be a lot less hassle to pay and claim it back than debate at the airport

Until a year or so ago, Qantas did use "the Piece system" domestically; QP membership gave an "additional piece" entitlement.

However, as you note, it has changed and uses a weight system with unlimited 'pieces'. It is now aligned with the international system.

As posted by Mal, you are entitled to 40Kg as a QP member flying Business.

Up until my last flight 3 weeks ago I was using the Piece system without any issues :(

Thanks all for your comments/answers, it has confirmed what I was dreading. It is a huge cut in baggage allowances and I am very annoyed at Qantas for this change (did anyone even see this announced anywhere?)

I think it happened in about Feb or March this year (announced for tickets bought after Nov or Dec last year IIRC), so not sure why you were still able to use the piece system. There was a lot of writeup on the Qantas site about it under Baggage, but not sure that it was published to QFF'ers etc.

Here's one discussion here about it: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...tas-increase-excess-baggage-charge-17108.html

As long as the weight of your pieces does not exceed 40Kg in total, you will be fine. As fafr as excess fees go, QF seem to have also put the system in place to help ensure that agents actually charge for it

It may have been that the total weight of your "pieces" did not exceed your allowance.

(Also, if your itinerary involves travel across the Pacific to/from the Americas, the Piece system is still in force.)
