I like Qantas its always my first choice when I book hence my Gold Status but one area they are really bad is One Way International Flights

I cruise a bit and in the past year I have needed quite a number of one way flights and with Qantas I find the cost is just prohibitive in most cases, for example a one way fare from Hawaii costs more than a return fare out of Sydney and going to the UK I was up for around 85% of the return fare etc. In each case I am finding significantly better deals with other airlines like Singapore Airlines who seem to deal with one way fares more fairly.

I want to use Qantas but their policy in this area clearly prevents this.

I suggest that you have a hard look and weigh up the value of your Gold status, then how much it is costing you to stay 'loyal' to Qantas. These days customers' loyalty to Qantas is being reciprocated less and less.

You will probably find not being loyal to Qantas is very liberating and saves you quite a bit of money, which you can then part use to compensate for whatever service you got from being Gold in QFF.

I know one-way airfares aren't always great with any airline not just Qantas.

In saying that I did manage to find 3 sector one-way flights flying EK or QF from KUL-SYD for ~AUD450-AUD550 one way. I think that's a pretty good deal and allowed me to use the last of my valuable AA miles on one-way awards to Thailand.

What is the issue with expensive one way fares? AU NZ are OK as is intra EU in my experience. Is it a government driven issue?

Just how they choose to price. If you look at the Qantas engine they actually price a return ticket as two separate one way fares,
they just don't make any sale fares or cheap classes available for one-way booking.

Using points or (daresay even) Jetstar or other LCCs is often much better for oneways.

Perhaps they know that people would book one way out and fly someone else cheaper coming back, thereby losing 50% revenue?

Thank you, so not due to a govt restriction in your view?

The way qantas displays it on the site is half the return fare, it is not priced as two separate one way fares. It's just the way they choose to display it.... those fares are not available independently at all.
