Hi.

I had the pleasure of flying on the A380 from Toulouse to Sydney. Some notes for you all:

• First is more subdued than competitors' products. They're not suites, but I reckon offer almost as much privacy while maintaining a sense that you're still inside an aircraft cabin. Newson claims this was his intent (to feel as though you're in a plane with other people).
• The new Business Class Skybeds now lie fully-flat. The massage function is much better. It also has a "Remember this position"/"Revert to that position" function. And owing to the fact that there is A LOT more room between you and the seat in front, the IFE displays are in your arm rest (so not in the back of the seat in front of you as per the 747s). The Business Class fit-out is so spacious it feels more like a First Class cabin in that regard.
• Business has a 2-2-2 configuration and occupies most of the upper-deck.
• The IFE has been upgraded too. Content is the same, but the menu system has been redesigned, as has the in-flight map display, and there is also a camera mounted on the tail of the plane that links to the IFE.
• Premium Economy is as per the current 747 arrangement.
• Economy is - they claim - slightly more spacious. I didn't get that impression though from my look at it.
• The Business Class lounge area is a nice idea but I think fails to be of any real use. There is I think space for five people (out of a Business Class cabin of 72 or something), tucked away in a corner of the upper deck.
• There is now an espresso machine in the Business Class galley as well as First.
• The toilets in First and Business are now more spacious - at a guess, they're 50% bigger.
• Crew will be using PDAs on this aircraft, so they can move through and take drink or meal orders, while their colleagues follow up and deliver it to you while the original person continues moving along the cabin.
• Internet connectivity is only partially available. For a connection fee of $US3 plus a charge per KB, you can currently access your email and some Instant Messaging services while you're in the air.
• Some believe they'll reconfigure it some time down the track to fit more passengers. On the other hand, I have also heard that it's currently on the verge of being too heavy for the SYD-LA run and needs to have some components removed and others lightened for this purpose, so perhaps that's the reason behind the extra room throughout.

I should finish by saying Qantas seriously turned on the charm on this flight. I dread to imagine the wine bill (1996 Grange, 2001 Dom Perignon, etc).

Regards,

WTL.

Wow, a very impressive first post! Welcome :)

Glad to see you enjoyed the delivery flight. Wish I was invited onboard!

The changes sound quite nice.

WTL, welcome to AFF. :D

Thanks for the input; I'm supposed to be flying the damn thing in row 66 (exit) in November, but am considering changing to the (available) 51H. ponder ... ponder ...

Welcome to FF. A very nice and well written report.
How did you manage to get on the flight?

I forgot to mention - from the horse's mouth - there will be a premium on A380 J and F fares. Not surprising really.

Is that to be transpacific (where a significant premium is already built in), or Oz-Europe?

MEL-LAX is one of the world's longest non-stop runs. If the thing can't cope with SYD-LAX, it will really struggle with MEL-LAX!

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly confident that there is not a premium for J - only for F.
John Borghetti said so!

Mr Dixon didn't specify. He was asked about premiums (As per Singapore's A380s I think), and just said he was very keen to do so (all on the public record BTW).

Not too sure. I got just got off a SYD-LHR service this morning and was told about the above in general terms by one of the crew. In fact he said it was going in for major work before MEL-LA next month. Tends to explain the huge amount of room between the seats in Business I guess.. although how much of this is simply necessary now that they lie fully-flat I don't know?

Thanks for the report WTL - I'm guessing you are a journo but you don't have to confirm that - welcome to AFF!

Yes you may be right. Dixon spoke about this only in very general terms.
The premium class already exists - for First Class only.

R class is the critter, often on an A388 flight you'll see R7 F0 A0, or perhaps R9 F1 A0. All 744's have R0 ... but generally F availability and perhaps some A.

Not quite. The lay out is 2-3-2 as opposed to 2-4-2 on the 747 and has two dedicated toilets for the PE cabin where as on the 747 it is shared with Y
• Crew will be using PDAs on this aircraft, so they can move through and take drink or meal orders, while their colleagues follow up and deliver it to you while the original person continues moving along the cabin.
Only in Business Class
• Internet connectivity is only partially available. For a connection fee of $US3 plus a charge per KB, you can currently access your email and some Instant Messaging services while you're in the air.
The US$3 is a flat fee and has no per KB charge but is for web chat only. E-mail has a per read and per KB fee (over a certain KB limit) though the first few lines of your 50 most recent e-mails are free.

Am I jealous? MUCH!

Thanks for the trip report. My first trip on it is LAX-SYD in January in row 53 but and I'm really hoping for an upgrade :D which is a pity as I'm no where near platinum status at present.

The premium is only for F.

There is a very good reason why there isn't and in my opinion won't be an premium in J.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I am sorry, I mean the seats are identical as is the service.

Many thanks for this - good to get a perspective early on. I have no idea if/when I will be flying this in the future - I can only hope :)

Great report. My envy levels are rising.

Can't wait to give the A380 a go one day....
