having recently achieved gold status with velocity am deciding between the two hotel programs offered. dont have a favourite in mind and have read several posts on here but still not sure. i am leaning towards HH but appreciate feedback on best. dont travel for work anymore so stays will be for pleasure. travel a bit around the workd and possibly the USA later in year. all feedback appreciated. thankyou

I am in Priority Club. A good program for the USA, with a range of properties from Holiday Inn Express through Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and Intercontinental. Choices in most cities. My experience is that members are treated well - upgrades, free breakfasts are some privileges I have had. No experience with HH, so cannot comment.

Go with Hilton Gold, in Australia at least there is some chance you will be able to get lounge access, but don't do the match until after 1 April as then you almost get 2 years benefit from it.

Yes Hilton is more expensive in Australia but worth it if you are Gold.

Between Priority Club nothing and Priority Club Platinum I haven't seen any noticeable difference.

Thankyou for the information.:D and the tip 're waiting until April. How does that get you nearly two years? I thought it as only 12 mths but will wait as not travelling till after then

HHonors status when gained before Mar 31 in one year lasts for the rest of the year and until Mar 31 of the next year.

When gained after March 31st of on year it last for the remainder of that year and the next year and until Mar 31 the year after that.

Does the Mar 31 date mean that? I thought the status one gained in a calendar year was valid for the rest of that year, all the following year and through to Mar 31 the subsequent year, regardless of when in the first year status was gained.

IIRC, all anecdotes raised here about VA SM to HH related to those who jumped in when the SM was first offered and only gained the following year and the subsequent year to Mar 31 but that was largely because a) the SM was only offered in Aug. '11 and b) HH took forever to process those SMs which meant most of us were only seeing them very late in the year, effectively wasting a year of status, whereas those who waited until early the next calendar year, achieved status for a full year longer. The only part I can't remember is whether there were stories of pre Mar 31 gaining the extra year?

I guess if the status is not needed in a big hurry, wait until after Mar 31 just to be sure.

Oh and I'd say HH offers the better value. Seems about all IHG gold gets you is a morning newspaper and some extra bonus points each stay. The IHG benefit I do see here in Oz is the fact there are more properties at more locations whereas Hilton is limited to just 7 locations here. OS is an entirely different story. IHG gold can be bought for $50, so that sort of gives you an idea of the value of that one whereas HH golds regularly get exec room upgrades which includes lounge access with complementary canapes and drinks in the evening and breakfast in the morning (often full breakfast in the restaurant), and as HH benefits applies to both you and your partner (and unofficially, often kids as well) and also includes things like internet, HH gold can be worth well over $50 in just one stay......in fact hundreds of dollars in just one stay!

That's what I meant.

To put it another way, most who jumped in with the status benefit in late 2011 received cards with expiry dates of March 2013 - those who waited until April have expiry cards showing 2014.

Hilton treat me brilliantly as a gold. IHG generally couldnt care that I am platinum. I would go with Hilton.

This is my experience as well... providing you are going to hit the 4 nights to trigger it.

Thankyou for the clarification. HH in April it is. Looking to go to Fiji for 5 nights in May / June and stay at Hilton so all should be good :) Now to find friend to come with...

Four stays to trigger it.

I'm not entirely sure the 4 stay requirement was for gold. Certainly for diamond, but gold??????

Yes, I took the Hilton Diamond VA match in Jan 2012 and it was granted until end March 2014. Confirmed expiry on telephone twice and via multiple Diamond cards posted to me.
A new status attained in a calendar year is valid for the remainder of the year it was gained, and the subsequent calendar year up until end March of the third year.
No need to wait until end March to apply

I was facing the same choice with an upcoming US trip which will make me gold on landing there and platinum upon return (got to love family pooling). I have stays in the US at both Hilton and IHG properties and was going to choose HH. But I got HH gold status by other means (with the help of AFF)so I will probably use Velocity status to choose Priority Club.

you could do the same and get both.

See discussion Instant Hilton Honors Gold Promotion (sorry don't have enough posts to include link) in Hilton section.

Not for Gold, and I suspect the Diamond requirement is not enforced.
Maybe not much, but there has been one poster who indicated they lost their VA sourced HH diamond status after having no stays in the 6 month period after registering.

The four stay requirement is only for Diamond.
