PR flies ex MEL, SYD and BNE to MNL and uses the A333 (more modern than QF's) with 1-2-1 lie flat in J ex MEL and the narrowbody A321neo, also lie flat in J and the only airline ex Oz to offer this, but in a 2-2 in J small cabin of only 12 seats. The Thompson Vantage XL seats on the A333 don't have quite all the bells and whistles of some other airlines - not quite as much storage space - but I've still found them very comfortable. Seats like 2A/2K/4A/4K on the A333 are the pick of the bunch because one is right next to the window with the console adjacent to the aisle, meaning one won't get bumped by an errant trolley (or passenger).

The A321neo in J does not have direct aisle access for window seat passengers but remains a huge improvement over narrowbodies like the B738 'recliner seats' that QF and VA for instance operate DPS - MEL overnight.

PR's mid winter sale has some great prices.

Japan's NH has about an eight per cent recently acquired interest in PR (often referred to as 'PAL').

One can travel 'open jaw' into and out of different cities in Japan, for instance, buying a Japan Rail Pass ('Green') to cover surface sectors in an enjoyable way with Japanese hospitality. PR has a more extensive Japanese network than QF/JQ/3K.

One could also fly into PUS and out of ICN as PR has a daily flight MNL - PUS and two daily flights MNL - ICN. Similarly flying in to HAN and out of SGN or vice versa is a possibility, and PR also has recently commenced flying to PNH so one could fly into BKK and out of PNH.

Research the connecting flights ex MNL as the ones that show '333' on FR24 usually mean the refurbished A333s with (as above) J lie flat, a good premium economy class (W) and Y with all seats having IFE. Some of the A333s have not been refurbished and still lack IFE, and have poor legroom: these tend to be used to the Middle East and to ICN. Routes like MNL - HKG offer W class on some flights that is a dead giveaway for the refuirbished A333s being the aircraft as the unrefurbished ones lack W class.

Similarly the A321neos that PAL has are preferable to its older A321s as the former have IFE to all seats and as mentioned, lie flat in J.

There are also one way fares available that while unsuitable for many (and more expensive than return sale fares on a per kilometre basis), may be handy if one wants to 'position' to Asia and then book a series of return trips from there (say if one worked in Asia).

Specialist Filipino travel agents in MEL, SYD and BNE may sell these advertised PR online fares even cheaper and have the bonus of a person to contact if something goes awry:

Ask a travel agent about arranging 'STPC' (free hotel accommodation with transfers and meals) should there not be a connecting flight same day ex MNL. For Y travellers, the hotel will be a basic Red Planet type but for J in particular, expect a four star hotel or perhaps 4.5 star that may have an extensive buffet at meal times. I don't know which hotels the airline is using at present but a friend on a previous occasion received the Manila Diamond Hotel that while about 35 years old is classy and has a good buffet in a renovated large dining room.

There are six flights a week ex MEL and nine ex SYD at present, but two distinct timetables for each, so check which one is better for connections each way. The BNE flights (five days a week) operate (with the exception of one slightly later flight each week) to one timetable.

Here is the present PR timetable (international - the domestic one is also in its site). Some AFFers may be surprised at its extensive network (and good frequency to USA and Canada, including nonstop on the new A359 MNL to JFK):

A good travel agent may be able to arrange a longer stopover in Manila, enabling a beach visit. It can be cheaper to book such domestic fares online with PR rather than adding them to an international booking. Has always seemed counter-intuitive to me.

Some travel agents in Melbourne - Philippine Tours (03 9384 1844) and My Travel Solution (03 9314 6957) are respectively advertising A$539 and A$520 return Y MEL - MNL, so they are lower than the Philippine Airlines' website prices. Star Flights - 1300 728 759 - is advertising A$525 return for this route in Y.

The cheapest fares tend to be for the A333-operated PR208 that departs MEL at 0440 hours and due to arriving MNL at 1050 has good onwards connections, and southbound PR207 that departs MNL at 1640 arriving MEL at 0300. This flight runs three times a week. Similarly from SYD the cheaper fares may be more on PR214, the 0600 hours to MNL and PR213, the 1115 hours day flight MNL down to SYD. However the differential with the more 'traditional' timetables of PR210/PR209 (the MEL route) and PR211/PR212 (Sydney route) won't be huge.

These Melbourne-based agents should also be cheaper on J and W class fares than the website.

Zignal Travels in Sydney - 02 9822 2750 is one I'd not heard of but it's advertising the PR seat sale. However its lead-in fare is A$630 return SYD - MNL in Y, and A$2280 return in J.

I ought have clarified at present that PR runs the A321neo to SYD and to BNE, although allegedly at some stage the A333 (much higher seat capacity: 309 v 168) may return on the SYD flights. During December/January (absolute peak time for Oz to MNL) it may operate the A333 again every day but I've not checked that.

UPDATE: jase05 (below) states that the A333s will return to MNL - SYD and v.v. in August 2019 with frequency per week dropping from current 9 x A321neo to 6 x A333. Very welcome as so many including me prefer widebodies for multiple reasons, including basic things like easy access to lavatories.

Thanks for this information. I've got flights to MAA and I guess I'd do a stopover in MNL before heading to MAA and back. Also with reduced J fares, sounds like an opportunity to try and experience J hospitality with PR.

Webjet has a sale to London (and Europe) with Oz - LHR 'starting from A$4679' but that doesn't include Webjet's $54.90 total booking fees.

So even though this PR one is direct from the airline, it undercuts Webjet and arguably with the A333 from MEL and then A359 from MNL nonstop to LHR on what in PR is a full service airline, good safety record with usually pretty good staff and reasonable to excellent meals (great champagne, but humdrum Rawson's Retreat is one of the reds offered in J), the PR offer (that individual travel agents as above will bring down further) is a bargain.

I don't know what airline Webjet is promoting to LHR but one of the airlines it's advertising to elsewhere in Europe is Air China whose staff do not have the flawless English of all PR onboard staff. Nor does Air China offer famous Filipino hospitality. (ONe Webjet fare I saw was MEL to LHR via CMB with UL for A$4879, but unlike PR, UL (on which I have travelled) only has A332s with 2-2-2 in J).

The bottom line is book with a specialist travel agent on this gradually becoming better known second tier airline in PR and obtain value for money. The only other negative is that the PR lounge in MNL is poor, but in MEL it's the Maharba lounge (opening at 0300 hours for PR208 apparently), BNE the Qantas J lounge and in SYD the SQ KrisFlyer lounge, and elsewhere round the world various others shown on the PR website.

I can't stress too much that one does have to check the days because not all PR flights are daily, so use the timetable link in a previous post above.

Just a heads up but I believe that starting in August all the SYD flights will moving to the A333’s and service is dropping from 9 to 6 per week on that route

Your and my amendment to an earlier post 'crossed', so I need to change it above again. Great information!

From 4 July to 14 November, PR has reduced the weekly Melbourne flights from six to five. However this still gives good connections 'beyond Manila' on some days.

From 4 December 2019 to 30 January 2020, MNL - SYD - MNL flights that as jase05 above says are becoming A333s will increase from six per werek to daily due to Christmas being peak period. Two distinct schedules remain.

I did a 'ghost' booking for MEL to HKG via MNL on 10 July 2019, returning ex HKG (overnight) on 30 July.

The A$609.90 all-inclusive fare (25kgs luggage, meals) is still available.

On ITA Matrix, the next cheapest fare was CI at A$948 return, so the PR fares can be a real bargain. I hope a few AFFers take advantage of this good availability.

CX. VA and QF nonstops (in that price order) were between A$1002 and A$1179 return. Some have the time to travel with an intermediate stop, via which there are big savings to be made.

Percentage wise for this randomly selected journey, the J class fare difference wasn't as much: A$2648 return on PR v A$3003 return on VA, but it still means an extra A$355 in one's pocket, so nothing to be sneezed at. Double that for couples.

A good travel agent may be able to arrange a MNL stopover at little more than the above cheap PR fare, and as noted above, specialist travel agents will undercut the airline internet fares.

As one always should if FF programs are free, join Mabuhay Miles and if travellers want to, they can transfer the miles to EY's program and maybe NH's given that the latter owns a small percentage of PR.
