so not sure if I missed this option or not possible on the mobile but is it possible to check in 1 way only on a return day trip?

had an issue where I was on elevate fare, but as the system had auto checked me in for the return I was not able to change my flights
I booked using some Amex TC I had so had to deal with amex travel.
they rang virgin and after being on hold had my check-in reversed yet neither could still change my flights for some reason.

took about an hour or more to get it sorted out but in the end wasn't really sorted out. I have a credit now for the original ticket value but had to rebook new flights for the return journey.
not a biggie but just that it took an hour to do it

It is definitely possible if you use the Check In Kiosk, as when you check in for the 1st flight the computer will ask if you want to check in for the return flight and get the boarding pass.

I normally use the check in kiosk at the premium entry gate in Sydney, I only have carry on with me, I only get the boarding pass for the first leg of the fifo and the second leg that is on the same day is not checked in yet.

Being two flights the common sense thing to do would be to have to check in twice. Or give an online option to cancel check in

I used Amex travel to utilise my TC and they are surcharge free
