Hi everyone

You are flying to a distant (>8 hours) destination and have the choice of flying J on a daytime flight or J on a night time flight. A good example of this is Melbourne to Tokyo.

Which do you choose and why? Choose wisely grasshopper.

cheers Peter

Night - for me, the main reason to fly J is to get a good sleep so you don't lose time travelling through the day (for business and pleasure). Sure the food is nicer and other benefits like lounges, etc, but if I'm on a daytime flight, I'm more than happy flying some of the better PY products.

I agree with that reasoning, however as my J flights are few and far between (points upgrades only) I tend to choose the daytime flights (ex Aus) to maximise the experience. Then I fly home in Y and wish I had requested an upgrade for that night flight instead...

If you can sleep in J you can probably sleep in Economy, so why waste the money and the experience? (I can't sleep in either).

If you can sleep overnight in J, you will hit Tokyo bright and fresh, ready to hit the road flying and ....... go to your hotel and wait for your check-in time, or leave you bags with them while you meander around waiting for check-in time, or pay extra for early check-in. Where is the gain?

Whereas flying during the day time, you'd enjoy being in J, hit Tokyo that night, check-in at the hotel, sleep well and be ready and fresh for everything the next morning.

Renato

Please explain??????????????????????????????????????

I have never managed more than 2 hours of very broken sleep in Economy. In First and Business the situation is VASTLY improved.

I can't really sleep even in F, interestingly I have better luck when the seat is not fully flat but at about a 60% incline.

Got rescheduled on to a very odd day TRANSPAC with NZ.....1050 departure rather than the usual 2230. I didn't like it. I can't sit and watch movies for more than 2 hours or so...so the night flights are perfect..... that day flight had me trying to sleep out of boredom.... and that ended up as an overly long "afternoon nap"...Felt like cough on arrival. AND I was in J!

I have trouble sleeping on a plane - even in SIA Suites - so I book day flights where possible.
And when I've had enough of the "entertainment" I'll pull out my kindle. I can read anywhere, and am happy to read for hours at a time.

I sleep pretty easily, and even in economy I can get a few hours of sleep (not great sleep but sleep). I prefer flying J in the day, as I like to take advantage of the service and space while I’m awake.

I guess we're all different, but my observation is that about 90% to 95% of people sleep in economy, while there are a few souls like me unable to sleep and watching the entertainment system.

My experience is it's less than 50%

The question might be 'how long' do they sleep for? brief or hours on end? Did they take a sleeping tablet because they were in economy? use a bit of alcohol?

I have to admit if it's quite turbulent then I'm not sleeping in either business or economy. I start to wish I'd paid for the lower cabin if I wasn't going to sleep, but I can't predict the weather.

But I'm the guy who's had a stuffed back for many years, and who is constantly walking up and down the aisles - and stretching in front of the extra legroom people. My observation is that much more than 50% are sleeping - how well they are sleeping I don't know.
Cheers,
Renato

I met some people in Bangkok who always take sleeping pills at the start of a flight.
In my constant walking up and down the aisles during flights, there are lots of sleeping people. If only half of them were awake at any one time in the middle of the lights out period, I'd have noticed it.

Depends what you want to do and when! If you want to hit the ground in Tokyo for dinner and a bar, take the daytime flight, sleep, and arrive refreshed ready to go out. If you want to hit the ground during the day to start sightseeing, take the night flight, arrive on Tokyo time, and be ready to go.

Also depends, I guess, what you want from the flight. If you want to maximise the experience most people prefer daytime. More elaborate meal services. If the flight is a mainly a means to getting there, it gives you more flexibility to plan your flight based on what you want to do on arrival.

If I'm travelling for work I'd rather overnight and sleep on the plane. If its for leisure I prefer to have a day flight and make the most of the food/drink/service. Can still sleep if I want - but its my choice if I do...

Really struggle to sleep in economy and PE, but give me a mostly flat surface and I'm out...

For me I'm not fussed what time I take a flight as I know I am not going to sleep on it anyway regardless of what class I am flying in. At least it makes booking choices easier as I am not fussed about what flight I take either day or night, just which ever fits the timetable the best. The downside is I know when I fly Y it is going to be a long haul......

For the 7-9 hr sectors day flight ... for longer than that I am ambivalent between the two, it really does depend on many factors.

I am happy to work the full day on the plane , so I don’t see much benefit to overnight flights when travelling for work unless back to back meetings. Much more productive to spend the day on the laptop (without interruption, other than flight attendants asking if I want another drink) and then a night in a hotel than a day in the office and then a night on a plane.

Having said that, I don’t have children so get it that it may be better when traveling overnight for work to come home and spend time with family before heading the airport mid evening (sorry Sydneysiders, I know that’s not an option for you). As an Australian living overseas, even to maximise time with extended family when back home overnights are important (but if I am redeeming in J ... if possible I would rather take the day flight and “work from home” on the plane down to Australia than do an overnight flight.)

Daytime for me. I can’t sleep well on planes in any class so give me a hotel bed over a lie flat seat where time isn’t an issue.
I would love a morning departure out of LAX back to Australia.

Daytime J flying is a real treat and luxury but mostly I can’t afford the time :)

I am a night person in general.
Since retiring I am so happy to not have to get up early.
I love going out for dinner. If others want to meet up for lunch I try to negotiate 1pm.
All hair, doctor, etc appointments are afternoons.

So I rarely book any flight earlier than about 2pm departure.
