Hi,

I was hoping someone could give me a rough estimate on how many points and SCs i would earn for the following routes, I have looked on the Velocity site but got confused, Most likely in Discount economy but possibly Full fare economy.

1. MEL-SYD(VA)SYD-LAX-MCO(DL)

2. MCO-IAD(DL)

3. NYC-LAX(DL)

4. either LAX-MEL(VA) or LAX-SYD(DL)-MEL(VA)

Thanks for any help, Ben

Based on what I've done before:

SYD - LAX is 40 SC in discount Y
SYD - MEL or SYD - BNE is 10 SC in discount Y

Thanks for the replies, So i should get 60 SC from MEL-MCO, which means i only have 60 SCs till i am Silver, Getting excited as I have never held any status other than the basic ones.

Hi,

I'm not sure how VA does their domestic points linked with international flights, but MEL-SYD is definately 10 SC.

SYD - LAX with VA is 40 SC at Discount Economy you get a half a point per mile so 3744 points.

LAX - MCO with DL you get a full point for Discount Economy or half a point for Promo so you'll either get 2218 points or 1109, you need to check fare class also 20 status credits.

Number 2

MCO - IAD with DL 758 if in discount economy, if promo fare 379. 15 status credits provided Virgin do count this as 758 miles.

Number 3

NYC-LAX 2464 if in discount economy, 1232 if Promo fare. 20 status credits.

Number 4

LAX - MEL with VA 3961 points, status credits 40 status credits.

LAX - SYD with DL discount economy 7488 points, promo fare 3744 points. 40 status credits.

SYD - MEL once again not sure how VA calculate a linked domestic leg to an international. but will be an additional 10 SC.

I don't fly Virgin very often and have never flown Delta so if I'm wrong someone please correct me just going by how I read the earning rules on the website.

for domstic legs of international journeys , you will earn at the milage based system on VA flights

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Just make sure that the DL flights are operated by them or Delta Connection. Having a DL flight number (eg operated by Alaska) isn't enough.

Hi,

The Itinerary has been finalised but I am unsure if it was booked with VA or DL, can I still earn the points on Velocity if booked through DL?

The trip is as follows:

VA811 MEL-SYD B738
DL16 SYD-LAX B77L
DL1462 LAX-MCO B738

DL1718 MCO-ATL B752
DL150 ATL-DCA MD90

DL422 JFK-LAX B752

DL417 LAX-SYD B77L
VA824 SYD-MEL E190

Thanks, Ben

Doesn't matter if booked with VA or DL in terms of points or status credits. But you will only get 'eligible sectors' on the VA ticketed legs. But since you only need 2 for Silver - you are OK on that front.

Recommend booking through VA (or at least, with VA coded flights) as you need those to meet the "eligible sectors" requirement (as iambents mentioned).

Additionally .. is there any way you can end up on VA metal rather than DL metal for SYD-LAX-SYD? I'm sure the VA 777 experience would be nicer than the DL 777 experience - and the ticket price ought to be the same thanks to the joint venture. The VA website will probably have a meltdown if you attempt to purchase your itinerary online, but if it does you should be able to call them to get the same itinerary.

I don't know what dates you're looking for, but for random dates in February I'm seeing an airfare that looks like this:

MEL-BNE VA353 (Q)
BNE-LAX VA7 (Q)
LAX-MCO DL1462 (T)
LAX-MEL VA24 (Q)

That's pricing out at $1467 per person. The other internal flights are probably best booked directly with Delta. If you were to book an itinerary like the above, at that price point and with those fare classes, you will earn:

MEL-BNE (874 miles): 437 points, 15 SCs
BNE-LAX (7170 miles): 3585 points, 40 SCs
LAX-MCO (2217 miles): 1109 points, 20 SCs
LAX-MEL (7944 miles): 3972 points, 40 SCs

I think domestic flights connected to an international itinerary earn like international flights for points calculation purposes (not 100% sure, but there'd be no other way to calculate it -- so it makes sense)

Hi Notzac,

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately, It was a part of a group booking so I didn't really get a choice in the flights, Also I have already started the trip.

I now have another question, I don't have the reservation number so have not added it to my bookings, So far I have received the points for MEL-SYD by claiming missing points, I only received 23 points, Is that a mistake or is it calculated with the international flight which I will claim after the trip?

Thanks, Ben

Group bookings are a very different beast when it comes to points earn I think -- not sure what the correct number of points ought to be in that scenario. Perhaps call VA when you get back?
