Platinum EconomyX seat selection for travel companion on separate booking

For many years, I have used the “hack” to upgrade my wife to EconomyX, I.e. get her to sit next to me, when she is booked on a separate ticket (due to work booking one of the tickets). I have never been certain if they waive the upgrade fee for her, or move her to my reservation, but I always assumed the former.

This week I have contacted the guest centre twice and been told no that’s not possible and no they never did it. PointHacks has the “hack” listed at least as recently as August 2024.

I know they’ll do it at the airport for us without question, but like to do it in advance.

Does anyone have any recent experience with getting this done? I tried to search for a thread on this but came up short.

I've done it a few times. Most recently was in March this year, so it definitely can be done. Ask them to link your bookings and then to arrange seat selection – which should be done free of charge if you're platinum.

Ultimately though, it will depend on the agent you get. The switched on ones will easily do it for you. Unfortunately, they seem to be few and far between.
