Flying SYD to LAX for a week in California.
As I live in the country, I run a CDMA phone (of course). So a pre-paid US SIM card isn't on, unless I buy a cheapo 3-band GSM phone before I go.
Is that reasonable, or should I investigate renting a pre-paid phone when I get there?
Or is the whole thing just too expensive to be worthwhile?

Do you know anyone who could/would lend you one for the trip:?:

yeah, just borrow a standard digital/GSM tri band phone and get a sim card when you are over there.

if you were near brisbane you could take your pick from any of half a dozen i have lying around my joint :)
