Well if you really want to eat food like the locals it is probably not what you would call good.
The most famous local food would have to be the Philly Cheesesteak.Nearly a must to visit South Philly and have one at either Pats or Genos who both claim to have invented it.To be genuine it must be served with chees Whiz. Also comes Mit or Mitout.Either with or without onions.
The next local institution would be The Reading Terminal market. The first farmer's market in the US.Plenty of little food places.A lot of Amish stalls as well.Definitely worth a visit even if not eating there.
Chinatown in Philly is probably the best in the US IMHO.More genuine Asian food there than the rest of the US.

Of better restaurants-we always enjoyed Morimotos for Japanese inspired food.
Stephen Starr is the Philly chef who has an interest in many restaurants.Keeps changing them though but usually good.

A pity that Le Bec Fin is closed=where Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore had a meal in the film Ghosts.

Thanks for the reply drron,

Think I will give the Cheesesteak a miss, the idea of Cheese out of a can is not worth contemplating. I have the Reading Terminal on my list to visit and will see what they offer. Isn't it funny how we can always fall back to eating Asian Food, shows what an appealing range of dishes they cook no matter where.

Yes, especially when it is an unnatural orange colour :)

Shoo Fly Pie is an amish staple, but I prefer their donuts. Most amish desserts are VERY sweet. Aim to get to the markets early as by lunchtime it is very busy. There are a lot of cooked food options as well as fresh fruit and veges - at these markets it was the first time I saw purple potatoes and carrots - and that was over 10 years ago when our so was living in Philly. :D
