Hi Everyone

Off on a business trip to Perth / Ad. 1 night each city and want to be fairly central in both / 15 min walk of good restaurants and stuff to look at!

Have never been to Perth and our travel policy is fairly elastic... so can stay pretty much anywhere. Couple of people have recommended the Sheraton Perth as it has been refurbished and you can walk to some Pier or something  ;) but others have said it is still a bit old. Any comments or further suggestions?

Have been to Ads many times - have stayed at the Hilton normally but it is a bit far from Rundle St etc in 40 degree heat. Was thinking one of the hotels along north terrace like the Playford or the Stamford Plaza.... any thoughts again? Although not heaps closer than the Hilton to the action, I have been recommended to try the Medina Grand Treasury...

I have jagged myself the QF A330 skybed service across as well yay :p Hope there aren't any last minute changes in aircraft!

The Medina Treasury's fantastic, but i'd still stay at the Playford, I love it.

If it's Rundle St. you want, why not consider one of the 4.5* Pacific Intl Suites at Hindmarsh Sq...would be 2 min walk from there to Rundle St.

I really like the Rydges in Perth.. nice, modern, very central.

Yeah I'll agree about the location. Great! (Havn't stayed here, but have had a great brekkie at their casual restaurant a few times). A lot of people like the Sheraton/Novotel, but I find them out of the way unless you have business at that end of town. The Hilton is old, and they don't treat elites very well unless you stay there regularly.

There is a Holiday Inn across the road from Rydges. Never stayed there and it doesn't look that flash from outside, but could be an option if you're after PriorityClub points.

The Hyatt in Perth is very nice. The pick of the bunch is the InterContinental Burswood Resort. They also have a Holiday Inn a couple hundred metres away. The Rydges is nice if you get above the entry level room. The Novotel Langley is great and they have a fantastic American buffet breakfast for $25. All of these hotels are within 15 minutes (by taxi) to Victoria Park where there are a number of restaurants, as well as South Perth.

Just for anyone who doesn't know, the Burswood Intercon hotel is not in the city.. it's a $15 cab fare or you can get the train from a dodgy nearby station.

In Adelaide I have stayed 50+ times at the Hotel Richmond in Rundle Mall. It is a small boutique hotel with high ceiling rooms, hip bar/restaurant (First) and very friendly service. When staying two or more nights, I'd eat in their restaurant on one night and walk a couple of blocks to one of many good restaurants in Rundle Street for the second night.

Being at a slight disadvantage in that I tend not to have a reason to stay at Perth Hotels, the Sheraton seems fine and I would have thought only a little younger than the Hilton.

IMO the Hoilday Inn across from the Rydges is not a good example of a Holday Inn.

On other hotels, I have heard good things about the Duxton, there's a couple of newish Medina's around (one near the convention centre, one closer to Perth railway station - but good luck getting into either). I know of people that have stayed at the Chifley as well without complaint.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

- Hotel Richmond does look very cool, love the trendy boutique hotels, the Hatton in South Yarra Melb is great too if you are into that style :p

There are comments on this forum on the Holiday Inn City Centre (Perth) from Lindsay Wilson and his poor treatment.
The Hyatt was looking tired last time I stayed though that was 2 years ago so may have had an update.
The Hilton is good though as mentioned they do little for their elite and I think they are rather expensive sometimes.

Nothing really stands out to me so I think I'd try the Intercontinental next visit as it will be a new experience for me..

In Adelaide I've only stayed at the Hilton and that is good and very close walk to the China town restaurants.

I stayed at the Adelaide Hyatt in late November, and walked to (just past) Rundle Mall every day in ~38deg heat. Was about a 5 minute walk.

Great location too, right on the river (beautiful running track if you're into that sort of thing), and near the casino if that's your thing too. :D

Seriously though, being Adelaide, everything's reasonably close to everything. ;)

Haven't been to Perth before, but the positive comments on the Sheraton are encouraging, as I'm spending 3 nights there over Easter. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

I do not stay much in Adelaide but have tried the Holiday Inn which was not pleasant . Next time its the Hyatt or Hilton for me.

Thanks Chris - you must be a regular to the Sheraton to be on first name basis with management!!

Febs, Hyatt was defintely on my list as well, having lived in Adelaide for 4 years I absolutely know that everything is near everything  but I'm travelling with some people (ahem Syd marketing girls) who require limo transfers for anything over 100 metres :D ;) and was thinking dinner on Rundle St. Hyatt is closer to Hindley St though I guess, maybe there are some hot new restuarants along there by now, it has been 2 years since I was last there.

Any restaurant suggestions for Perth (nearish Sheraton) and Adelaide CBD welcome as well!

If you've lived there then you probably know better than me, but I found "Cos" to be quite nice (18 Leigh St) for a relaxed meal.

On Gouger St, I've always been a fan of Star of Siam (not my favourite Thai restaurant in Australia, but decent), and we were told Gaucho's (Gauchos Argentinian Restaurant Adelaide) is excellent, but weren't able to get a booking. The Greek Mezze was also quite nice.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Star of Siam is OK - there is a fish restaurant close to it as well - DONT go there.

I have stayed at the Hilton a couple of times - this latest time as a Diamond without much in the way of Diamond benefits (bottle of wine on arrival). It is close to town but it is also a little tired.

Just a sanity check - the A330 on this route (the Mon AM Syd-Per) is skybed right!?

Yes, all Qantas A330 aircraft have Skybeds. The non-Skybed A330s all went to Jetstar.

In Perth, the Hilton hotel is very tired (even the exec suites, club floors etc) and was downgraded to 4 star. The location is quite good but I wouldn't suggest it. The Sheraton would be a better choice, although the location on the terrace is pretty boring after 5:00 when Perth goes home to sleep. The Hyatt is on the eastern end of the city, not near the new East Perth development though. Views are nice but location isn't great and the service has slipped in recent years. The Duxton is in the building which used to be the tax office and it shows. Also quite far east but service is generally pretty good.

In Perth my pick would be the Outram - it is a small luxury hotel of the world and located in West Perth on Outram Street.

Outram Street is well serviced by the free red cat service through the CBD and is well located to good food and bars in West Perth/Perth (the best ones are on the West End anyhow) and Subiaco. All rooms are the same and include features that you would expect in club level - drinks and canapes in the evening, al-a carte breakfast included etc.

If you're a coffeesnob, Outram Street is also the home of Epic Espresso, Perth's best coffee by far. Try an affogatto with their vanilla bean icecream or a ristretto. Dine in is far better than takeaway for some bizarre reason.

The Richardson is also a new boutique hotel that would be worth trying but I can't really comment because I haven't been there.

Rydes also has a good location (corner of Hay and King sts in the city - West end) and is on the red cat route too.

Near to these hotels is Box Deli - a friendly yet trendy bar that serves decent coughtails, has a good wine list and offers free unlimited, very substantial canapes on Wed/Thurs evenings. Goes very nicely with a Cloudy Bay sauv blanc. Can't go wrong!

In Adelaide, try the Hyatt or Stamford. I was very impressed with Stamford. I went in there late in the evening after storming out of the Mercure hotel that I was booked into for business. They couldn't acommodate me but suggested a great serviced apartment down the road which did the trick at a budget price. Whatever you do, do NOT stay in the Mercure in Adelaide. You'd be better off sleeping in the Ikea carpark just outside of the airport. To be honest I found most food in Adelaide to be pretty average but maybe I just picked the wrong places.

I'm happy to give you more details about Perth if need be.

The Outram was recently taken over by Wyndham Resorts, and they now advertise the rooms as studio (sleeps 2) and suites (sleeps 6).
