Hi
I am starting an on-line Wine and Liquor Store.
What is the best way to receive payments for the purchases by our customers ?

Is tieing up a Mechant Facility with a Bank the only way?

Can I accept Credit Card payments thru any other way?

Does Visa and Mastercard deal directly with small business also or only thru a payment gateway / bank?

Pl enlighten with some advice.

Cheers!
Peter

Re: How to receive payment ON-LINE

Probably best to setup a shopping cart type facility and then use the services of an acquirer for the CC transactions.

There are quite providers who will be able to assist you as banks don't accept small business traffic directly.

Re: How to receive payment ON-LINE

Depending on your volume give consideration to a Virtual POS. We are using Bankwest Virtual POS, low monthly fee, 0.8% commission. When we process our handful of daily online orders we just cut & paste into the VirtualPOS onscreen terminal and process our transactions manually.

Re: How to receive payment ON-LINE

We had a merchant facility through CBA, and then used Securepay to process the payment online.

Pay Pal is incredibly popular... I would say about 70% of our Customers used Pay Pal, which surprised me a bit, but made me realise how popular it is...

Customers do not have to have a Pay Pal account to use Pay Pal - they can just enter their credit card details and be done. And you do not have the huge yearly fee!!!

Goodluck

I cannot advocate against PayPal enough. Their security systems are lacking at best and fraud is far too common.

Granted, I have somewhat of a vexed viewpoint, as my PayPal account was hacked (Actually that's not quite true, PayPal gave my login and banking details away to the third party, so there was no actual hacking involved, only gross stupidity.) leading me to go into overdraft by around $1500 after the account was used repeatedly on eBay.

Now thankfully Westpac caught the transactions and reversed them (as I have no overdraft facility on my accounts) but I still technically owed PayPal that amount of money for a matter of weeks while they 'investigated,' which scared the cough out of me.

They may have lifted their game since last year, I've never cared to find out, but yeah, I avoid them at all costs now.

Yes... from a merchants perspective though, there is a massive % of people that use and love Pay Pal... there is a large number of people that are not prepared to purchase online using a Mastercard/Visa... for security reasons... so they use and trust Pay Pal...

Stuartfaz, I am not discounting your experience... at all... simply pointing out that there is a huge market that could be missed without using Pay Pal...

Maybe this should be moved to The Playground, as it's not really a travel related question ?

If you can get this deal - I would take it - And I work for a competing bank. There is no way around merchant facilities - except Paypal. Accept both.

Im not sure what you are trying to achieve. The wholesale cost to the bank is around 0.54% so they need to make at least something out of it.

Recommend you speak to Webcentral on free call1800 800 099

We have used them for a long time - they are very good :D

Good luck

Nah, Paypal still have significant security issues, in a number of ways. Under ebay's control, they have market support though - though I'm not sure how big their fan base is. Most of what I see is them trying to boost acceptance through bonus offers and promotions rather than having dominant share of mind, and there are a significant number who are at best apathetic towards them or at worst avoid them like yourself.

Hi Buddies

You guys are fantastic.
I have some very good advices from you. Let me work on these leads.

And yes once I launch my website remind me to send you some good coupons for some very good wines.

Peter

PS: Just wanted to know if I go with a Bank or PayPal but not with any gateway like eWay, SecurePay etc then do I have to incur any other costs from any other parties like Visa / Mastercard or any one else ?

I don't think we can answer that question as each provider will have their own range of fees which may include but not limited to:

Setup fee
Monthly facility fee
Telephone fee
Internet fee
Transaction fee (by card type and country)
Monthly minimum fee

I am sure there will be others. Need to carefully look at your offers and do some modelling of costs based on some assumptions of your business growth.

Wine offers are welcome.

A good suggestion, which I have now done by moving to Websites & Software - it really doesn't belong as a thread on any Forum here on AFF, but I'll leave it as the original poster has already got answers and it's been here a while (slipped under our guards).
