Hi All quick question about paying customs duty. After many years of OS travel a "rookie" mistake has lead to my cards getting cancelled by the bank while OS. Luckily I have some cash reserves on me for the last few days.

Anyyway my question is I know I will need to pay duty on the few extra cartons of smokes I am bringing home and

If the cards are not fixed up by then I wont have the cash when I land. Do customs let you return later in the day/week to pay the duty and collect the goods?

What was the rookie mistake ?

Likely he did not advise the bank of his impending travels and being security conscious, they would have contacted him - unsuccessfully - then cancelled the card out of fraud concerns.

Once, I was still on the phone to arrange a USDM award flight (with fees) when Citibank called my mobile to query those fees.

I'm sure had I not answered the phone, they would have stopped those payments and suspended / cancelled the CC.

The OP could have called up his bank to unlock it, unless it was something else.

That's my suspicion

My mistake wasn't not advising the bank... it was letting the card out of my sight... then the charges started rolling in. Luckily the bank and I realised within about 24hours. But the bank opted to issue new cards with new numbers not just new expiry dates. anyways kudos to the bank just leaves me scratching the head at the airport and then home for a day or so.

if you have eftpos on a separate handycard or something they take that too! (I was in a similar situation, lost my CC an hour before departure to AU and had to quickly transfer some money from one account to another).
