I have a trip to New Zealand coming up next week and will have less than 6 months validity on my passport (about 5). Do you think this will be a problem?

If I were to go get it renewed today, which is an option, I assume my existing passport would be cancelled and I'd have to wait for the new one – which might not arrive in time. Am I correct with this?

Does anyone have any experiences with this?

Really should have just Googled it first.

As I suspected, the cosiness of Australia and New Zealand helps a lot. This info may help someone else with the same question though:

Is my passport acceptable for travel to New Zealand?
Anyone travelling to New Zealand (including New Zealand and Australian citizens) must have a valid passport/travel document when entering New Zealand.

There are also rules regarding how long must your passport be valid for, in order to be acceptable.

In the case of NZ and Australian passport holders or NZ residents/Australian permanent residents (with current travel conditions), your passport must be valid for enough time to allow you to travel to New Zealand (ie, it must be valid on the date you are entering/leaving NZ).

However, in the case of people coming to New Zealand temporarily (eg. visitors, students, workers who are not Australian or NZ passport/permanent residence holders), the passport must be valid either:

for at least 3 months beyond the date you intend to depart NZ, or
for one month beyond the date you intend to depart NZ, if the issuing government has consular representation in New Zealand that is able to issue and renew travel documents (you should check with your issuing authority before travelling).

(Mods, feel free to close this if you think me answering my own question is a tad useless ;))

Last time one of the junior SydneySwans went to NZ, it only had 32 days left on it upon entry and 27 upon departure. NZ passport control didn't even comment. That was in 2011.

...your passport must be valid for enough time to allow you to travel to New Zealand (ie, it must be valid on the date you are entering/leaving NZ).
So the basic restriction is that your passport must be valid on the date(s) that you wish to travel. Makes sense really, as you could decide to "visit" NZ well beyond the validity of your current passport (just as many Kiwis come to Aussie and decide not to leave, smart really :p). So, if your passport expires while you are there, then you need to get a new one before you can leave.

Remember most Australians have the right to simply turn up in NZ and start living there, without advance warning, should they wish to do so! (And vice versa.) So having entry restrictions (in either country for the other), requiring passport validity beyond the date of travel is redundant.

You are correct in your own answer mrsmart.
On renewing your current passport, it will be instantly cancelled (cut). A replacement, your new one, will take about 3 weeks to arrive unless you pay extra for a priority issue.
