Will be in Paris for 6 days. Can anyone suggest a good central location to stay. Close to metro lines, cafes, restaurants and shops but not too far away from the usual tourists attractions.
In terms of areas The Marais (3rd and 4th) is great for shopping and right near Notre Dame, there are a bunch of good restaurants around the area and a heap of bars on Oberkamph and in Bastille which are only a short walk away.
The main department stores (Printemps/Galleries Lafayette) are in the 9th near Opera but there is not much else around there.
The other option is to stay in Montmarte which is a very touristy area however its still nice, if you want cobbled streets and the postcard Parisen feel then stay here, sights around the area include the moulin rouge and sacre coeur.
In the end Paris is tiny and you will never be more than 15-20 minutes away from anywhere by metro.

i stayed in the 2nd near Sentier metro in an apartment. Loved the area, great foodie street. Apartment definitely the way to go. I used Centre Paris apartments, paid 100 euro per nite.
