Paid seat selection refund on UA Reward seat cancellation?

G'day all

I have a Velocity Reward seat booking on UA and have paid for preferred seats. I want to change my flights as a better option is now available.

Has anyone had experience when a VFF Reward booking on UA is cancelled that the preferred seats are refunded?

I did read one comment that moving seats back to a free option through UA app triggered a refund but I don't want to risk it.

You have a refundable ticket...so per their T&Cs, you should be eligible for a refund of the preferred seat fee.

I doubt that moving to a free seat would trigger a refund.

The question is whether the refund would be automated or you'd need to contact UA after the VA ticket is cancelled.
