For the QFF brains trust. I note that I have 50kg of included luggage and each piece no more than 30kg. Trouble is, I would like to take a solar panel with me and it's considerably larger than the dimensions offered. I'm talking rough figures of 160cm x 80cm x 9cm packed. It's only 15kg, so weight is not an issue, but I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with QF and oversize checked baggage?

Has no one ever tried oversized luggage on QF?? Oh, well, if I find out, I'll post the answer.

If you were travelling from the USA to South America I would suggest putting it in a box that said "Sony TV" - in my experience airlines would allow anything in that sort of caper :)

But seriously, I think your situation is sufficiently rare that a phone call to Qantas is the only possible source of maybe-reliable advice :)

You haven't stated whether domestic or international (or route), but I think the easiest will be to contact qantas (have exact dimensions) and ascertain if it's treated akin to "sporting goods" (ie. need to keep within weight limit but ok to carry) or whether it would be considered freight.....

For the record, the bike dimensions:

Qantas bike pack dimensions:

  • length: 140cm (55in)
  • width: 30cm (12in)
  • height: 80cm (32in).

So presumably if less that that, there's no issue in terms of size / fitting in the hold, it'll just be whether they want to charge you or not....
