I was looking at a multi-trip booking on QF site and wanted to do
SYD-LAX --- Make my own way LAX-NRT --- NRT-SYD

but it seems I cant ? I can only come back from within Nth America ?
Looking at my options I can either do a OW pacific explorer ($3grand from Aus or $2.7 grand from NZ ;-)
or One way fares all the way

Might there be a better way ?

I was sort of looking to do this in the opposite direction last year.

You can do a flight with AA between SYD and LAX via TOK - back then it was $1000 and allowed a stopover.

My plan was then to use points to get back from the USA to SYD

U might be able to get a reasonable o/w with VA or Delta to LAX and then AA on the way home via NRT.

It all depends how much the QFF points re to you versus saving some money with other airlines.

Open jaw journeys are generally only allowed from the same region or country on turnaround. You are talking about two one way fares beteen different countries eg SYD/LAX & NRT/SYD. Both countries have totally different fare types so you can't pay half return fares for each component thus creating your open jaw fare construction.

Eg permitted open jaw journeys may include:

a) SYD/YVR - JFK/SYD
b) MEL/LHR - FRA/SYD
c) PER/SIN - BKK/BNE

What sort of ticket is LAX/NRT eg fare or award ticket & how much have you paid for it? What was the reason you bought that ticket separately from your other flights?

I would consider looking at a return fare ex Australia to the USA on an Asian carrier that permits a stop in NRT eg JL if you're in the OW camp or MH if in *A which would mean going via KUL also. MH used to fly NRT/LAX not 100% sure if they still do.

Even two return tickets could be an option eg SYD/LAX/SYD plus LAX/NRT/LAX or even SYD/NRT/SYD & NRT/LAX/NRT but I would think the latter may cost more as I would guess flying Japan to the US return is more expensive than US to Japan return.

MH is not in *A?

I thought it was SQ that did SIN-NRT-LAX on the 747. There was a trip report on FT about a first passenger and his like of the bubbly

Trying to be flexible -
In LAX by the 8/june in Tokyo by 14th - back to SYD or BNE by 20th June

I started looking at JAL SYD-NRT-LAX-NRT-SYD and it came out to $14,000
But playing around with it and did SYD-NRT-change to-HND-SFO-HND-stopover-NRT-SYD for about $2602 with taxes... which is good - new international service from haneda looks like a winner - plus a 7 hour change on the way to the US.

Otherwise two returns are
SYD-LAX $1627 return QF
LAX-NRT $1630 AA

Trying to stay OW and not use points atm.
Although Singapore Airlines want $2900 for
SYD-(SIN-NRT)LAX-NRT-(SIN-SYD) shame i'm not *a

Doh! Looks like you'd have to join the MH enrich program unless there's another program out there that has an agreement with MH.

MH used to fly KUL/NRT/LAX & KUL/TPE/LAX but don't know whether they still do this

Tuppaware are you locked into the separate LAX/NRT sector or is there still time to 'bug out'?

Anyone think its possible to book a Circle Pacific OW fare starting from NZ with an AUS credit card ?

I worked out
Ex AUS - $3699
Ex NZ - NZ$3499 which equals AU$2,685
add a postioning flight $200 - AU$2885... much cheaper

Do you think I could do it?

Anat0l did a similar itinerary right after the BNE AFF do back in October so might be worth giving him a PM as I'm sure he'd have one or two suggestions.

Whilst acknowledging fare rules may change, in 2008 we did BNE-LAX-JFK, SCL-AKL-BNE as an open jaw.

BNE-JFK, LHR-BNE was also a viable open jaw at that time.

Are you doing this on the QF website - it often is limited for these sorts of things, but any decent TA will be able to do it (in our case, we used a TA but I actually found the option online at qantas.com)
