Online Check-in QF with AA tickets

Believe it or not, I have never flown QF domestically before! We are flying QF BNE-SYD and QF codeshare on TN SYD-PPT. Apparently I can't book seats in advance on the domestic sector unless I use online check in. I realize I can't check in online for the TN sector.

Also, I have a feeling that unless I do the online check in, the good seats will be gone and we will get stuck in the back. Otherwise, I would have been happy to check in at the airport. We have carry on backpacks only. We need to make a run for the international terminal in SYD to check in on TN and get the TRS refund for the GST on the camcorder.

Also, Qantas.com doesn't recognize the AA record locater. I don't have a QF FF, I used AAdvantage for all the segments.

One more silly question! Do they feed us on the early morning flights BNE-SYD?

So what should I do?

You cannot on-line checking when the itinerary has international component. Even for the QF domestic flights.

You'll need the Qantas (Amadeus) record locator. Give Qantas a call and tell them the details about your flight and they'll give it to you. You can then access your booking online through the Qantas website.

Your AA membership may help you get a better seat, but don't expect any miracles. Qantas pre-allocates seats around 24 hours before the flight (according to Qantas FF'ers preferences and then other pax).

When online check-in opens, you may find a better 2x seats, but may not happen due to seats all being pre-allocated.

You can keep watching your flight and accessing your check-in again up until 1 hour (I think) before your flight and still keep changing seats around. So as cancellations/reroutes/earlier flight people don't need their seats you may be able to snaffle better seats.

IIRC, you're on paper tickets? I think paper ticket's can't be online checked in. Also, I believe NM's comments are correct, although I have been able to Online check-in a domestic flight previous to an Intl flight (ie BNE-SYD(overnight) checked in online -MEL(International) checked in at airport without any dramas. )

I'm not sure whether domestic legs of an international itinerary can be checked in online, however it is indeed definately not possible to use OLCI unless with an e-ticket

Try putting the AA SABRE record locater into https://www.virtuallythere.com/ You should see the QF locator on this

The virtually there site doesn't recognize the record locator but it comes up fine on AA.com.

I don't care so much about printing the boarding pass, I just want aisle seats as close to the front as possible.

I can try calling QF later today and ask them to book my seats again. I have good seats booked on all flights except just that first segment.

QF reservations cannot do seat assignments for domestic flights. You will be able to choose seats when you get to the airport.

Domestic legs with an international connection cannot use OLCI.

For example, on my DONE4 I could not use OLCI for my BNE-MEL that had a connection to MEL-LHR. But I could use OLCI for the purely domestic segments at the end of my DONE4.

The problem with OLCI is that the check-in process has to include passport/visa validity checks and that can only be done by a real person at this point in time.

So if the domestic segment connects to an international flight, then no OLCI. If it does not connect to an international flight then it should be ok.

OK, I got a QF record locater and I can now view my entire booking on Qantas.com. But you're right, the QF CSR I called can't reserve seats, I got him to put a note in the record that I prefer aisle near the front. So annoying I can't book the seats in advance! He said the flight is wide open now but it usually fills up with business travellers (who will probably use OLCI and grab the good seats).

And I forgot to ask if they feed us on the flight!! Do they feed Y class on BNE-SYD runs?

Depends on what you call food but you will get a snack of some sort, and depending on the time of the day like breakfast a sort of a meal.

You will get fed. When you say early morning I presume you mean before 8am. Y class brekky normally includes some cereal, a bread, maybe a danish, an apple and some yoghurt. Coffee, tea and juice is also served.

QF have introduced a bacon and egg muffin in place of the cereal for breakfast at the moment.

Surely you will be able to check in for the QF/TN codeshare in Brisbane when you check-in for your domestic flight. The security at SYD international is a mess though...really busy with people throwing out their liquids, gels and creams! Make sure you haven't got any liquid/gel/cream/paste more than 100ml and it is in a clear plastic ziplock bag, particularly as you aren't checking bags.

Yup, got our tiny little hotel sized shampoos in an official ziplock baggie we bought at the travel doctor's office. Those little bottles can't be more than 25ml each. We will use most of them in Tahiti and Easter Island.

Yes, I think we do get both boarding passes at BNE but we already have reasonably good seats on TN. I would prefer to go direct to the gate as I don't want my backpack getting weighed at check in. It's 10kgs which includes the camera gear and books. I am a good actress and can carry it effortlessly and it is under the size requirements, it isn't even full. TN says their carry on is 10kgs and QF is 7kg so I have to get those extra 3 kgs past the nosy check in people.

My husband's backpack is just a tad over 7kgs as he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag!

LOL, the bacon and egg McMuffin sounds good to me, we aren't fussy! It's better than Virgin Blue where you have to pay for it!

Its funny how the Liquids, Gels, Creams restrictions are implemented around the world. On my last ATW trip i had my zip-lock bag all organised with my Vegemite, Toothpaste, Deodorant etc inside. However, at many airports I completely forgot about it and after removing my laptop computer and shoes etc, I just plain forgot to take my zip-lock bag out of my carry-on bag and it went through the x-ray inside my bag. Each time this happened (at least 50% of the airport checks), it was never detected by the x-ray process and I was never asked to remove it.

The times I took it out and put it into the tray, it was never visually inspected by the screening agents.

Perhaps I was lucky and I would not avoid having it screened on purpose. I was very surprised when repacking my laptop and putting on my shoes that my liquids bag had not been extracted from my x-rayed bag and I was to suffer the wrath of the TSA or other screening agent.

From memory, the places I forgot to remove my liquids bags included Brisbane, Melbourne, Hong Kong, DFW, Shicago, Miami, Los Angeles (T4 and TBIT), and KUL. I was very surprised by this.

During re-screening when transitting in HKG last month, no-one was removing their liquids bags and no-one was questioned after having their baggage x-rayed. Despite signs everywhere and availability of the zip-lock bags security was not enforcing this
