Hey all,

Am quite new to the whole points game but looking at booking a rewards flight from PER - JNB on J.

Best flights I can find are with Emirates flying PER-DBX-JNB and back.

I was going to book the one way ticket now and then in a few weeks book the return when seats become available but when I look at some dummy dates when choosing one way the taxes are ~$600-$700, when I choose a return they are roughly the same.

Is this correct, that if I book 2 X one way tickets il be paying almost double the taxes and fees as if I just waited and booked it as a return.

Making sure im not overlooking something here.

Thanks,
Lawrage.

Some routes have anomalies. This could be one of them. Taxes ex-Australia are also cheaper as there has been a reduction in fuel surcharges ex-Australia.

SYD-BKK-SYD is cheaper than BKK-SYD-BKK which is close to AUD600. But SYD-BKK and BKK-SYD one ways are only ~AUD450.

Go figure. Should be zero fuel surcharge especially on points earned via flying.

Thanks for that JohnK, so a bug of some kind then.

I thought it may be the departing Aus thing so I checked the flight one way from JNB - PER and it showed R6510 which is again ~$600 - $700 AUD.

I might just wait it out then, hope the outbound flight doesnt sell out.

Ring and ask them to join the two one way bookings. I had the same issue travelling to the US recently. Called to join the bookings and ended up with a circa $700 refund on the coy payment for 2 PAX.

And SYD-BKK-SYD about $300 AUD.

General rule with QF is any ticket issued in Australia will have substantially lower SURCHARGES (by at least 50%) than ticket covering same city pairs issued outside Australia. TAXES are the same. In the BKK example, taxes are about $100 AUD, so surcharges for BKK-SYD-BKK are $500 vs SYD-BKK-SYD about $200. Some exceptions where surcharges are regulated.

I just noticed the lower taxes ex Australia when I was comparing one way awards from Melb to hkg and vice versa. Cheaper surcharges from Australia.

i did phone and try that, but the person I spoke to denied it could be done. However as I still haven't managed to get them to ticket a change I requested to the award in July, I am clearly inept at this phone stuff....
