Have a friend flying some 10,000 miles on SQ in full Y next week. They're not going to get anything from *A status so Aegean etc. no good, just need the best for earn/burn. I'm thinking US or UA and then buy points for a long haul award, otherwise OZ or SQ more closer to home. Was even thinking VS since *A isn't a requirement really.

Since they're basically getting 10000 points regardless of the program, it's just a question of who would give the best award for that without any future earnings (buying miles is possible though). I'm looking at redeeming chart of various airlines I've never dealt with so any suggestions would be appreciated.

VS and then use their hire car earn to top up to the point you can get an award flight to HKG/LHR?

Yeah, I'm using VS for car rentals for just that reason. Might be the best idea, pity you can't transfer points on VS though - I think it's a situation where they'll be left to expire in the future. Cheers.
