One off AirNZ flight - where else can/should you credit points/miles ?

G'day,

My mum is travelling MEL-AKL-PPT in the next week or so and is booked on AirNZ. It's almost certainly a one off trip that's linked to a cruise and as such there's little or no benefit in enrolling her in Airpoints as it seems to be poor value or would almost certainly never have the time to be used before any dollars expire.

Are there any better alternatives for a FF program she could join and credit any miles or points into where she has more chance of using them in the future ?

She has no status (and is never likely to get any with her level of flying) so not worried about missing out on SC.

Credit to SQ KrisFlyer and you can then transfer the miles to VA?

Perfect, thanks - I wasn't sure if SQ was an option and of course the AirNZ website is very light on how you can credit elsewhere.

In terms of mechanics I assume that just means I get her a Krisflyer account and when she checks in I assume she can ask them to attach her KrisFlyer FF to her flight (i.e on her BP) ?

She has MEL-AKL-PPT and then HNL-AKL-MEL on the return leg.

I did have a look at Aegean as another alternative (from an old flyertalk post) but looking at this it appears it wouldn't work sadly:

As the flights seem to be ticketed in (W) which earns nothing apparently on a trans tasman or pacific flight.

I'm not sure if it'll earn anything on a SQ either so I'll have to look.

It's a pretty big hole in earnings where *A members seem to earn nothing on a large chunk of flight routes :-/

My wife and I are booked to fly OOL-AKL-YVR-AKL-OOL. I was going to credit to my SQ KrisFlyer account and my Canadian wife to her AC Aeroplan account. Just had a look at our booking class and it's G! Neither of those star alliance airlines (not even TAP which I was looking at for the status match) seem to pay for G bucket fares. Any other options other than signing up for AirPoints just for this?

And just for the record - the cruise operator just cancelled so my mum is now looking to figure out what to do with an airfare with no connection between the middle legs. Fun fun!

At least flights might be cheap at the moment!

BTW, I assume your mum is aware of the new medical certificate requirement for French Polynesia - French Polynesia Medical Certificate Requirement Effective March 9, 2020

Have you looked at United MileagePlus?

G'day Matt,

Yes she was aware of the requirement (was getting comms from the Polynesian government) but even with airfares possibly being cheap, she'd have no interest in the trip without the other family members (coming from a different country) being there.. she's all about the destination and not about the aviation. I'd definitely keep the trip and figure out something in between but since it's not me..

She is going to see if the travel agent can organize a refund and book to a destination she does want to go to. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as that's the simplest solution. Otherwise it would be a conversation with the travel insurance and I have no idea how that goes.

That's useful to know. The only do
Good call - G class is paid by UA at 25%
Useful to know about UA. Only downside is that it's well.. UA.. :)

Became an academic question as trip had to be cancelled and as it was a non refundable fare, resulted in loss of ~95% of the ticket (got the airport surcharges back).

AirNZ noted that bookings through TA mean airline can/will do nothing (bookings direct give them some leeway to think about vouchers etc).

Travel insurance was not applicable in this instance as it wasn't the carrier cancelling and not a direct medically related episode etc.

Just annoying as Mum is effectively a pensioner, means her only holiday/trip for the year and opportunity to see immediate family is lost (as well as loss of money for the air tickets).
