The only AU airline that does long haul flights is QF (and ~ JQ) VA has a few B737 short haul fights.
QF have yet to fly to ORD (not far from OMA) and other major airport
A small minor airport in Nebraska: not a hope (TomVexille is being optimistic)
The "international terminal makeover" is a big guess USA immigration and custom ~ bag - security facilities for possible (narrow body) flights to Canada - Mexico - Caribbean.

I've been to Omaha many times back in the 90's and 2000's - the company I was working for had a number of mega-data centres there.

It is NOT a place that would hold any interest for a tourist but it's a great place to raise a family - lots of white collar well-paid jobs.

Getting there was alway a hassle ex-SYD - needed to fly via Denver or Chicago with the chance of weather disruptions in the winter.
