I have heard of an opening special for those looking for an inexpensive hotel in NY on Long Island City - a couple of subway stops to Manhattan, 10-15 mins. It is a well known chain.
I know people who are already booking it. The website is selling rooms online for ~ US75 for a 'cancellable' king room : Non-Smoking Room with free continental breakfast, free WiFi and flat screen HDTV and desk.
Probably a good idea to have a refundable backup bkg elsewhere in case the opening date is delayed.
Public transport - Airtrain to the E train is probably simplest way to jet there from JFK.
This new hotel will be very close to the 39th Avenue station of the N train. From the hotel to the closest stop in Manhattan, Lexington Avenue (& 59th Street), which is right at Bloomingdale's, will be about 10 mins.
