Hi,

I've got an UC flight with Virgin Atlantic from LHR-NRT (VS900) in December, arriving T1 at 9:55am, and then connecting with a J flight on QF22 to Sydney, departing from T2 at 8:00pm that night. I have a few questions about my transit.

  1. Do you think I'll be able to check my bags through to SYD from LHR, or will I have to collect them at T1 and take the to T2?
  2. If I have to get them, I assume I will have to go through Customs, collect my luggage then wait until around 5:00pm before I can check in again?
  3. If this is the case, any ideas of what to do for about 6-8 hours before I can make it to the lounge?!?!?!
Cheers.

I don't think VS and QF interline (they didn't in Australia when a friend flew them a year or two ago), that being the case you will have to collect luggage, clear customs etc.

I did a four hour transit (with through checked luggage) and caught a train to nearby Narita town (10mins), and was a nice time filler, but you would struggle to fill 6-8 hrs there. I'd consider heading into Tokyo proper and do some sightseeing - you could be there by midday, and would probably want to comeback around 5pm. There are left luggage facilities at Narita, and trains in Japan are usually extremely reliable. (two options would be the Narita Express to centre of Tokyo, or Kesei line to Ueno - google them for more info). Of course the other option is day use of room at nearby hotel, not sure if any have day use rates though.

Thanks dajop, I had a feeling that would be the case with the baggage. I think I'll take your advice and spend 4-5 hours in Tokyo.
