Hello,

(not) another one of these questions?

As you may know I am going on a bucks week in late March08 and will be visiting HK, Macau and Bangkok.

I have a confirmed reservation at the Four Seasons HK on corp rates. However my mates aren't willing to fork out $2xx_ hkd plus taxes for a room.

Is there any good & value for $$$ suggestions nearby the Four Seasons? The price they are looking not much more than AUD$200 per room per night inclusive of taxes, so say no more than $1400HKD.

I've used it before and had it recommended by locals.

They are all better or worse than each other at different times.

Regarding hotel.com.hk - interesting that this site is still offering rooms at the Ritz Carlton given it ceased operations on Jan 1st this year. The new RC at Kowloon is due to open 2010, and will be IIRC the world's tallest hotel.

I will be staying at the Four Seasons HK, Crowne Plaza Hotel & Suites Shenzhen, Venetian Macau and Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok.

(now I need to find a suitable HK hotel for my mates due to $$$$)

All these hotels are top 5 in their respective city according to Tripadvisor.com so looking forward to these stays.

So I may provide a MR report in early April 08.

Hotel LKF, and the similarly named - but different - Lan Kwai Fong Hotel are up the hill a little from Central, and fall within your mates' price ranges. It's about a 15 minute walk from Four Seasons to Lan Kwai Fong.

I stayed at the Hotel LKF last week. Good rate of HK$1,300++ Great location but what a shambles. The hardware is good but the software is seriously broken.

Noone knows what they are doing, the front desk is a sea of employees all heads down and looking stressed. No acknowledgements when walking past the shambolic desk. The rooms are good but very dirty. The dust on the windows was thick - I wrote a message to the GM in the window and asked her to go and read it! The bathroom in my first room was little more than rice paddy - bad design - water everywhere including the bedroom. The front desk said there was a drainage problem in the room. Why use and why not fix it?

I watched this place getting built and thought great what an asset this will be. Sadly returning to HKG and staying there was such a disappointment.

Also stayed at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental - they could not have done more for us... what a blast. Luckily it was FOC - long story!

You have a great rate at the Four Seasons... I'll ask you for that next time. That is one fabulous piece of hotel work.

There are the IceHouse apartments (Ice House) above Lan Kwai Fong and the relatively newish Mingle hotel in Sheung Wan on Wing Lok Street that looks groovy but I know the building is a refurbed commercial one so the rooms could be.... ahem... tight!

Also the Ramada in Western is practical and well priced - as low as HK$500 last week. It is just a short Ding Ding or bus ride to Central.

Pardon me if I stray just a tad from your location Alanslegal, but it's the only place I've stayed in Hong Kong and I found it good. Not 5 star but nice.

Metropark Causeway Bay. I stayed on a deal (7 night stay but I presume your HK stay will be shorter than that) in Executive Parlour/Suite, but standard rooms can be had during March on wotif.com for ~$1100 thru ~$1500 (wotif only goes to mid-March at the mo).

The rooms would be smallish (as is standard in HK) but they (IME) are clean and well-maintained. Had no issues with hotel or staff. 2 mins walk to Tin Hau MTR (though we tended to use the tram to get to Central), 10 mins to Central MTR, then 5 or 10 mins walk to Four Seasons. Being a bucks week (will you survive this? - most people struggle to get through a bucks night!! ) if the boys are playing up late at night then cab is going to cost very little.

Harbour View room costs a little more but the view is great (at least from 30th floor).

Yes, I would be very hesitant to recommend the LKF. It is such a shame as it could be so good! Brilliant location. Grrrr... Rhombus - the incumbent management group - need a good kick.

I can also suggest the Novotel in Western - plain basic and simple and it can be sub HK$1000. Not goign to set the world on fire but it does have an ok pool on the roof, a shuttle to Central but there are buses and ding dings out the front door and it is 10 mins. The trams can be quicker in peak hour

I lived in HK for 7 years and go back twice a year - the place is fair booming. Great to see.

Try Bishop lei on Robinson Road Bishop Lei International House (Main) - it is run by a church but it is ok - nothing fancy but lots of my friends have stayed there. Just off the central escalator, buses out the front door.

There is also the Lan Kwai Fong Hotel Hong Kong Hotels - The Lan Kwai Fong Hotel Official Site - Hong Kong Hotel in HK - not actually in LKF but on Hollywood Rd near Cat Street and the Man Mo temple.

Just as convenient - everything in Central is 5-10 mins walk, escalator, HK$4.30 or so bus ride or max HK$25 cab fare.

The AUD is so strong right now everything is converts very favourably.

A good point for hotels is I always look on Wotif.com: Australia Hotels, Accommodation, Motels and then contact the property directly and ask for a deal ie breakfast and ofter it is cheaper. As was the case with LKF.

Tell your mates to save up - the Four Seasons would have to be most brilliant HK hotel - the rooms are hot and the service is brilliant. The pool... wild. Very interesting story there, but not for here!
