I took a fare PER to YVR via Narita with Qantas and Northwest. As the layover in Tokyo was several hours I had complimentary use of the Northwest lounge.

I must compliment Northwest on a stunning, beautifully appointed and run lounge. Qantas should take a page out of Northwest (Delta's) book. On my return I used Qantas Club, it was more than disappointing.

I would recommend that anyone with a QF ticket that is passing through Narita try using the American Airlines lounge instead of Qantas Club as it is superior by far.

Or if travelling in business class or with OneWorld Sapphire or Emerald status (as would be required to access the AA lounge), try visiting the JL lounge which in my opinion is even better than the AA lounge.

AA lounge is fresh, bright and has good views. JL lounge has better food and drinks. And the JL First Class lounge is very impressive.

And (even worse) if you are travelling *, go to the ANA lounge and you will find really nice sake from the Narita region. Sipped cold (as it's meant to be) it is a really nice aperitif.

on the topic of lounges in NRT.

I know i will have access to the NW/DL Skyclub on my flight from NRT>MSP>IAD but on return i am flying HNL>NRT>BNE with the return being NW from HNL > NRT with a five hour stopover connecting to BNE with QF (JL metal).

Being a revenue paying J class passenger with no status ability... which club do i get access to... The JL Sakura lounge or the QP?

If you're on a QF# then it should be QP. QF360 or QF390, depending on what date you're travelling, I believe.

QF390...

so i guess its the QP then.. o well... Beats the terminal!!!

Looking forward to the Skyclub though on the way over... after a good day of plane spotting will be a good place to relax out of the sun.

I don't know what the state of QP is like at NRT (if I went through that terminal, I wouldn't use QP - I'd go to JL First), but I found NWA lounge to be quite ordinary. Sure, it's airy, bright and quite spacious, but after being spoilt by BA Flounge at T5, QF Flounges and QF/BA SIN Flounge, the food selection seemed to be rather sad (although much better than domestic QP and better than BNE QF token Froom).

What I do have problems with every time I'm there is fellow passengers talking loudly on their mobile phones. I know it's not within lounge people's control but it's irritating. I don't need to hear your supposedly important conversation, thank you very much!!:-|

That it does - and the shower facilities are nice, as is the robotic beer machine. I just found the last time I came through NRT (January 10) it was full of people with kids. As in them, their wife (their guest) and then their 4 kids. Times about 10 families.

I like kids, but not when I'm trying to dull the pain of another few months away from my GF with some solid drinking. Maybe in future holiday seasons I should just do that in the airport bar, true "Die Hard" style.;)

I do wish there were still some 'quiet sanctuaries for adults' remaining around places, such as airport lounges. E.g. if a place serves alcohol, it is not a place for children. There could be a separate area for families, but I prefer not to hear children everywhere.

On the topics of lounges at NRT, I have just booked the Starclass 2 for 1 to Tokyo and as an OWE do I get access to the JAL first class lounge for me and my partner ?

No! You get access to the Lounge JQ have arranged for their starclass passengers - at NRT that would probably be the QP (Qantas J lounge)
