Hi guys
i just flew Brisbane -lax yesterday for the first time in business (yay :)!). I could swear 2 years ago when I flew PE with VA that there were noise cancelling headphones but there certainly aren't now?? Is my memory just fuzzy??

With regards to overall experience it was reasonable. I would give it a 6 (maybe a 7 cause I love my food ;).

Va7, row 5, window
pre-flight 3/10
the economy and premium economy line had 1 passenger waiting while the business and premium status line had half a dozen. Check in staff where friendly enough.... Maybe just unlucky with timing. The koru lounge was fine but VA domestic in Melbourne is much nicer. Would of been nice to be able to use the KrisFlyer silver lounge although I have never been in.

on board
food 8/10- I enjoyed it. Dinner was good! The heirloom tomato salad with feta was fresh and nicely dressed with nice feta (and this is from a meat eater)... The chiicesseemed a little limitedI had the beetroot ravioli with pumpkin purée, pine nuts and beetroot. Very nice... Although I burned my mouth a little! Even so I think I regret not getting the lamb which the passenger next to me got... It looked great! I think they could do a bit more with dessert - I ordered serendipity- death by chocolate. I had no idea what this was but was a little disappointed when it was just a tub of ice cream with some chic sauce at the bottom. It came in just the small ice team tub which is the same as PE/E. I am not much for cheeses maybe they would have been a better choice?

I do, however, love my food in general and also ordered 2 of the warmed chocolate cookies ( the warming made them feel less mass produced-assumption here and certainly lifted them overall). The chicken and pesto sandwiches where tasty enough. The mushroom quiche was tasty although again I burnt my mouth (sensing a pattern here.... I'm always too impatient ;)!). Breakfast was average...cereal, fruit (seemed pretty fresh although not rlly my department ;),nice natural yoghurt. The main was bacon, eggs, corn and tomato 'salsa' (latter I thought a bit of an odd choice?). I didn't finish it although to be fair that was because I was still full from dinner and the extras the night before!!

i am not really a drinker so can't comment much but the champagne at arrival seemed pretty good! Overall, serving size was good! Entree and mains were great if a little limited in entree choice (perhaps personal... I've heard don't order fish on planes). Order on demand offered good options and were tasty. Breakfast was average. Overall, a good experience but is it just me or could serving temps be cooled slighly... Or of course I could just wait a bit ;).

on board service 8/10
attentive and personable. They addressed me by name from mid flight onwards.. I guess it takes a little while to memorise them... I'm hopeless with names so I don't have a problem with this. It always makes me uncomfortable being called mr though so maybe asking what the passenger would prefer ?? Making the bed was prompt although putting it away in the morning could have been quicker. They did clear my breakfast without asking (it only had a small amt of yoghurt left which probably blended in to the crockery). Not a drama as I was very full but I hate leaving stuff generally and I would have eaten it (even tho my belly was very full!). Requests for on demand food were dealt with and wait times clearly explained :). Overall a good experience!

seat and bed 6/10
ok maybe I'm being harsh and had unfairly high expectations but are these really lie flat??? They didn't feel like it to me! I had adore neck the whole day after??? Again this may just be me but I hope the new seats are better( coming novemberaccording to FA with the a330's first). Upright I found the seat worse than Pe (from memory). I am 5'11 but couldn't get the foot rest in a comfy position.. Padding seemed like it could have been better overall. The duvet was very good initially and first impressions were great but seemed to becone more uncomfortable throughout the flight. I think this is down to the seat and hope this is improved with the refit!!!

entertainment 5/10
struggled to find stuff I hadn't seen... Previous flights there has always been a couple of newer things which I haven't seen so perhaps just unlucky. Screen response a bit frustrating at times

overall, a good experience with food and in flight service being the strong points. If I paid for this, however, ( this was upgrade on points) I would not have been happy overall! I should say this was my first business experience with any airline so maybe my expectations were set too high!!! I really hope that the new seats are a significant improvement and would still like to travel this product again in the future (I may upgrade back yet as I have the points and I must say I did have scold on the way over which may have tarnished my overall experience). Nevertheless, there is no way I would pay $4000 odd one way!!

Hi guys

They really didn't give you a set of noise cancellers? Should have definitely been there - in J they are in a seat-pocket, in PE they place them on the seat along with water, a blanket and the amenities kit.

There were over the ear headphones but they definitely weren't active noise cancelling!! I asked the FA and she said they don't provide noise cancelling headphones just regular over the ear!

I have noticed on VA flights even when I have been issued with noise cancelling headphones (with the third pin for power to the noise cancelling hardware) the power LED on the headphones doesn't light up. I have assumed this means that, for whatever reason, the third pin is not being supplied with power. Certainly the headphones have not operated in noise cancelling mode.
As a result I carry my own noise cancelling headphones even if I am flying in J.

The n/c headphones issued don't work other than as simple headphones on the 332's (they did work on the old EK critters) due to design incompatibility but have worked properly for me on the 77W's.

One way to test them is to plug them in & turn the volume right down to zip.

Then while still wearing them, unplug the cord from the socket ... plug it back in - repeat this several times.

If working properly, there should be a significant change in apparent ambient noise levels between when plugged in and not plugged in.

Perhaps with the OP's 77W there was a faulty socket or the 'phones themselves were faulty.
