Did a 1700 SYD-MEL recently.

FA came around with drinks cart and I said I would wait for tea/coffee. I was then told that due to SYD-MEL being a short sector, tea/coffee would not be offered.

Is this a new low in service standards?

In terms of the mainline shorter flights the official service guide used by the crew states that tea and coffee is offered in economy class on flights before 4pm from the beverage cart, and then for flights after 4pm, cold drinks (with complimentary beer and wine on certain services) are offered, and the hot drinks are served time permitting after the service. Depending on the where the cabin crew is, they may be able to get a hot drink from the front galley, but ordinarily the hot drinks are offered afterwards time permitting after 4pm because the crew are focusing on completing the service for the rest of the customers. From experience, the crew are often collecting in the service still when well on descent into a particular city which means there is no time for hot drinks they way the service is designed.

This has been the case for many many years.

It's disappointing to see sometimes there is a blanket "no" given to the request, because if there is time at the end the crew should get a hot drink, but as mentioned before, more often than not it can be a very rushed service despite what it may look like.

Flights operated by QantasLink on the Dash and B717 are operated by different crew groups using different rules so the service cannot be compared to some degree.

... but as mentioned before, more often than not it can be a very rushed service despite what it may look like.

TBH I wish some crews would display a little more urgency during service... it doesn't look rushed because they're *not* rushed :( Experience on a range of airlines shows exactly what is possible on even the very shortest of flight times.
