Hi all,

Sorry if this has been discussed before. From a quick search I couldn't see any relevant, recent threads....

Thanks to discovering the T-80 quirk on AFF, in the past as a lowly PS I've always managed to be able to snag up to about row 6 or 7 on a 737 and 26 or so on the 767. Ocasionally fluked even better (including 1A on a 5000 point upgrade on a Red-e during a promotion last year...)

It's now T-70 to QF447 on Tuesday, and nothing is available forward of my pre-assigned seat in row 39. I checked at T-80 this morning and same deal but dismissed it thinking I was maybe just jumping the gun a bit and the system hadn't quite ticked over.

Has T-80 become a thing of the past and WPs can now rest assured that their hallowed seats near the front of the cabin will forevermore be free of the tarnish of silver (and god forbid, NB) derrières? Or is the system just being a bit clunky because it's the weekend (or the gnomes who ran it have all been laid off....)

I've had some occasions in the past where it didn't work, so it may be a glitch as EF is showing free space:

Very Odd. Newb question, but on EF I take it blue = occupied? I worked that out by my amazing powers of deduction seeing as I'm in 39A and it's blue.....:p

T-80 isn't an exact science. It is just around this time that more seats get released. I am silver and logged on yesterday morning for my Monday flight at around T-75 managed to select an exit row seat in row 14 on a 737. I then logged in at around T-68 and managed to get Row 4. So it isn't an exact thing and is a dynamic process. I wouldn't think too much of it.

As travelislife says. Sometimes it is a bit later than T-80 though there appears to be no real logic to how it happens.

Sorry for my ignorance but why is a row 4 seat better than an exit row? We have exit row seats on a 767 this week, should I change them for a 'better' seat if one becomes available at T-80

I'm a lowly silver ff as well, the last time I flew QF (BNE-SYD 27/1) I went online the day before (The afternoon of the 26th so T-24 )and was able to select 34K (Exit row) on a 767,
not only did I actually get 34K but 34J was empty so I had extra room,34K is my new favorite seat,(On the 767 that is)in fact I would probably choose it over a J seat.
Obviously I may just have been lucky but I've never had a problem with seat selection.
Cheers
N'oz

Exit row isn't bad, it is definitely what I first look for as a PS. Row 4 has good leg room as well but has the advantages of service first and being able to get straight off the plane without waiting. I would take the exit row over say being in row 5 or 6. This is only relevant for 737's not 767's which have a different seat map.

Can someone elaborate on the T-80? Is it just when you log in closer to the flight you can select a better seat? Do you wait till your at the airport, then log in again?

T-80 (or there about) is when the seating will generally open up, so you aren't restricted to the seats available to your applicable FF status.
You can log in again athe airport, incase any upgraded people have moved from seats you want but it is not necessary if you have the seat you want.

Row 4 (on a 737) also lets you store luggage under the seat in front, if required, unlike an exit row. It sometimes gets cast offs from business like newspapers and jackets being hung up. Disadvantages on the 737-800 is limited overhead space above the row, but use of business overheads is sometimes possible, and no gate to gate IFE on the very new aircraft.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Disadvantage of Row 4 is the tray table is in the armrest so the seat is a little narrower and you cannot raise the armrests.

As a PS when you first book, the front part of the plane is blocked off from you e.g. from Canberra row 19 is usually the most forward you can select a seat. At T-80 a lot more seats open up including (usually) the exit rows and you can select a "better" seat. Nothing to stop you changing your seat as often as you like, so you can keep checking, grab the best available and then change again if still not happy if something better becomes available. Once you are SG you can get better ones first up, but even then further forward seats do become available later.
