I don't understand why Qantas provides complimentary newspapers between 6-9am on their flights but often run out of papers in their lounges. Wouldn't it make more business sense to provide a larger selection of papers in the lounges all day? Last week in the Sydney J lounge the only paper available was The Australian at 10am. The broadsheets are a good read but not the best on an aircraft. In the Brisbane J lounge they also only had The Australian at 6am but had hundreds of The Courier Mail at the gates. Instead of giving complementary papers to all pax on morning flights, perhaps they could provide a larger selection in the lounges for longer periods? They would have to look at the figures but they possibly could spend the same amount on papers but distribute them to the lounges rather than at the gates. This would allow those with status or who have paid for QC to benefit more from them. It would also stop those visiting the airport or flying with other carriers from taking them?

The problem is that it is the status pax stealing them from the lounge... The idiots should, but dont realise they are at the gate.

Or QF could provide sufficient.

The problem is the stealing and not picking up at the gate. Also seen people in ADL QP grab the Oz, AFR and the 'Tiser. Seriously! Having said that I will grab an AFR sometimes as that isn't at the gate.

How many are sufficient?
I think the same number of papers that are currently distributed between 6-9am for the general population would be sufficient. These could be redistributed in the QF lounges throughout the day at no additional cost?

Yep,

I have seen people take a 1 of each newspaper and also a magazine for the flight.

Leave some behind for everyone else.

They can't get that in, Virgin orders too many of them :p

True, mind you QF customers prefer something more substantial to tide them over should the possibility of another grounding occur LOL.

So you want 2000 newspapers in the lounge? Sounds reasonable to me....

Perhaps people should stop stealing them from the lounge instead. Now thats a thought!

There are so many Courier Mails left because they're rubbish and nobody would want one...

In fairness (on the word stealing only), QC newspapers no longer say they have to remain the the lounge. I've only heard one announcement in the ADL QC to say don't take papers from the lounge as they are available at the gate. Contrast with virgin which has stickers on papers that say they must stay in the lounge.

Of course, I agree people should leave them in the lounge and take them from the gate.

Might Platinum members using arrivals access ameliorate this situation by taking a paper from the gate to the lounge? :)

In due time, specially if the Q Streaming trial takes off, I can honestly imagine all the major national dailies & a good selection of newspapers will be available either via a seat back or using your own device connect to Q Streaming like services.

Would save an awful lot of weight not having to bring paper or magazines on board, not withstanding the mess of having to clean them up and the inconvenience when someone tries to read a broadsheet in an airplane cabin.

It would be a matter of the streaming system servers re-syncing either via WiFi or secured ground connection as they land in each port, grabbing a mirror of the latest digital edition of each publication, then serving these to devices as and when they want to be read by pax.

Stop taking papers from the lounge, and pick one up at the gate instead. Problem solved.

Well I'm doing my bit: I collect them from the gate on the way to the QP, thus leaving the lounge quota undisturbed. I noticed Virgin place little stickers on their magazines saying 'please leave in the lounge'. Guilted me so much that I actually had to return a mag that I had pilfered earlier in the same week!
