New York City Hotel Recommendations

Hi all

Your assistance is requested please.

Going to NYC in Jan - Feb 2024 (Yes, I know it will be cold !)

Looking for a decent hotel for 2 weeks, near a subway station entrance.

Would prefer midtown location, but not adverse to Tribeca or Financial District.

Budget is AUD 350 to 400 per day. Ignore destination tax for the moment.

This is a personal trip, so I have to pay out of my own pocket :(. On the bright side, I don't have to worry about desk space.

Any suggestions / recommendations would be appreciated.
 
I don't have downtown suggestions - notoriously they are damn expensive

these couple are probably left-field but hey may help other travellers as most things are just a train trip away from Manhattan

PS I did stay out at the Double Tree Newark Penn Station too adjacent the $2.75 PATH into under the World Trade center...

Rosen had been leasing the property for $5.3 million per year

DoubleTree might be a good option, since I'm flying into EWR.

Anybody else have any suggestions for midtown Manhattan ?
 
No recent suggestions for midtown, I prefer the Lower East Side myself.

I like HOTEL INDIGO LOWER EAST SIDE NEW YORK you can pick up rooms under AUD$380/night including taxes and it is a couple of blocks walk to Delancey/Essex. About 10mins on subway to mid-town. Cheaper again if you are a IHG member; lots of great neighbourhood eats.

You did however mention being open to Financial District, and Indigo (my preferred IHG brand) have two new properties there which are considerably cheaper:

HOTEL INDIGO NYC DOWNTOWN - WALL STREET from AUD$275/night including taxes.

HOTEL INDIGO NYC FINANCIAL DISTRICT from AUD$242/night including taxes.

Intercontinental Times Square, and consider doing it on points. Currently it is about 29000 points a night and there is a 100% bonus points sale on at the moment. 13 nights prices at 377000 points for rough Jan/Feb dates of 28/1 to 10/2, 376000 points cost $1880USD in the sale.

Edit: if considering this the Ambassador membership would be well worth it, on my last stay there we got a Skyview room which seems to be the normal Ambassador upgrade.
 
Don’t be deterred by downtown locations. Stay in the right place and you can take express subway services to various parts of midtown and uptown, as they fan out from there - and even be in Times Square quicker than you could walk from a lot of “Times Square” hotels. (And easy access to Brooklyn as well).

I’d hate to stay in Times Square for two weeks - alright to visit once or twice when there - but even though it is quintessentially New York - oddly I feel like it doesn’t have enough local (NYC) flavour and too busy with and appealing to domestic tourists ;) :p

We sometimes will stay a few days in one part of the city and move to stay somewhere else for the second half of our stay for a different experience.

Stayed there in 99, 01 and 03 - its upper west side near central park west; has a laundry which is handy (its a mix of permanent residents and hotels room).

But older property and on the tired side in need of a reno (it will be a shub not a walk in shower if that is important). Nearest station 72nd St (gab a grays papaya hot dog).

Agree it is why i like the Lower Easte Side, real New Yorkers live there, it is a neighbourhood with all the amenities (diners, delis, laundromats, good coffee that is not Starbucks) - short walk into SoHo or Chinatown, quick subway to midtown for theatre or shopping including 1 stop to Brooklyn.

W midtown is good (at the right price).

Grand Hyatt also good (v convenient to Grand central station).

I just got back from NY.
I stayed in the Motto by Hilton Chelsea. It should be within the budget you have set.
The rooms are small but perfectly designed (drawers under the bed etc).
It’s in a fantastic location at Flatiron / Chelsea, near multiple Subways but lots of great dining options within easy walking distance.

The views are absolutely spectacular!!

Most hotels are within a couple of blocks of the subway so I wouldn't consider that a huge factor on where to stay. I've just spent a week in NYC staying at a couple of Hilton properties of which I quite enjoyed Hilton Times Square which is around $USD200ish for late january excluding taxes/fees/etc which seems reasonable for NYC.
Doubletree Midtown Fifth Ave is (obviously) a midtown property with (what seemed to me) recently refeshed rooms. On the smaller side but completely fine for a solo traveller in a great spot.
I had a poor stay ar Hiilton Midtown so would not recommend this property.
 
I had 8 nights in NYC in December and split between Indigo LES and Hilton Motto. Both locations.

I had a local show me bits of the LES so if you end up there let me know and I can recommend a couple of places to eat and visit
