Just tried for availability on the new airline (V Australia) promotional return fare to Los Angeles (a$999 return). It seems fully booked.
First date out is 15 December, and the returns from 17 December onwards are already booked.
It has to make you wonder if they were ever available.
Did anybody manage to snag a cheap fare?

Didn't purchase one but I looked at some random dates SYD -LAX 11.1.09 and LAX-SYD 18.1.09 and found the $999 fare.

Try other dates a bit later on.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Plenty of availability at the end of Jan and Feb at this stage. Rest of dates gone.

$10k for J... and that's a "promo" fare.

DCIR22 or CCPSTAR1 are much cheaper.

Is Qantas / United about to match the opening special - the cogs are in motion me hears - no guarantee - it could be kyboshed (sp?) by the GM.

The $1899 normal fare is absolutely pathetic. V Aust have let me down on that one. I expected a lead-in low season of around $1299, but it looks like they want to take advantage of the mono (oglo)polistic pricing that Qantas has established and milk it for all they can.

Is V Aust a LCC or an airline based on the DJ Mongrel model? - the "I'm not too sure what type of carrier we are" mantra.

UPDATE
Promo J Fare is as follows (from Travel Daily)

Business class fares are on sale
now from about $6550, with
1.95m of legroom in the seat,
which converts to a 1.88m fully
horizontal flat bed, and DJ said it
was "working towards" providing
international lounge access.
The premium economy cabin
will offer 40 seats with a 96.5cm
(38-inch) seat pitch with fares
from about $2500 while the every
day economy fare will be $1899
inclusive of taxes.

V Australia is a full-service from what i see.. You get everything included and much the same prices and QF and AA (nothing too huge of a difference)

Just comparing available fares in Business class for 10 Mar 09 returning 15 Mar 09 (this a likely scenario for me).

QF have a range of J fares 6542 each way or 8387 each way. No difference in the fare rules - the higher fare routes through BNE or MEL it seems.

V-Aus are offering a restricted fare of 5024 or fully flex 6024.

Now for me personally and extra $500 each way with mileage earning and F lounge access - QF is looking the better prospect.

The V-Aus seat and dining would appear better (fully horizontal and dine anytime) but as I expected no earth shattering prices...

Has anyone found a retailatory sale elsewhere, yet?

I couldn't see Hawaiian doing anything - due to its full attention being the scooping up of the Hawaiian market. Aloha has stopped operating passenger flights after April. Looks like pricing is from an estimated USD$766 each way.

Sorry guys to get all your hopes up, i just random picked some dates, i did not know the J fare was promo !!! opps.
The real J fare would never get me to jump ship from a QF flight (if i was flying it).

Very close to what I was expecting.

Why discount when people are prepared to pay a higher price for the airfare?

Does anyone have any photos of seats etc. I am assuming that they are "slightly" better than the domestic offering (about as different QF's domestic/international is at least?)

Also anyone have any ideas how much, we as velocity members, earn on VS flights?

Re pricing: at an average price of $1250 - 1300 one way any day i think it is a fair bit cheaper than QF - and the fact that i can use all of my points towards it helps "ease the pain" of being away!

Economy sounds pretty decent, seat pitch is reasonable (although 34" would be better) the seat width is excellent as is the PTV screens.

Considering the prices are less than current and product is better than QF and looks similar to NZ.

Direct flights from BNE would be great though.

I was planning to travel to LA at the end of this year, and deliberately held off until Virgins Announcement.
I picked up one of the promo fares, and travelling SYD-LAX return for $1010 (with CC surcharge) in Y.
Using the $1000 saved (from Qantas) to put towards upgrading accommodation in LA. Pleasantly surprised about the seat/entertainment offering.
Looking at their everyday fares – nothing exciting:evil:

From the V press release.
"V Australia has confirmed its Sydney-LA launch route following months of discussions and negotiations with a number of airports in both Australia and the United States of America."

What a load of rubbish. As if there was any other route under real consideration. Anyway, as they aren't flying to Melbourne I won't be likely to be on them. Interesting though, i think this means QF's inaugural A380 route will be SYD-LAX (as I have always suspected) not MEL-LAX as has often been rumoured. QF will need to entice the customers and with the new UA seating on the way it sets up a mini-battle at least. But not if you are in MEL or BNE. As usual we get BUPKES.

I just did a search on seats from BNE and easily found a return trip in Y for $1303 all inclusive + $15 CC fee. QF price for same dates and days either side is $2355.

I'm very tempting but think I'll wait and see what the next destination is.

The aircraft are yet to be built, so there cannot be any photos around yet.

Hmmm... always a problem.

Aside from the fact that we are 9 months out - what time are they expected to be delivered? and what a/c are they flying anyway?
