Newcastle has just opened its new passenger screening facility - replacing the standard baggage X-ray and metal detectors seen at most domestic terminals.
The bags now work like a lot of overseas airports - there are stations for you to stand at, you get a tray from underneath - you put your bag and empty your pockets in the tray. There’s no requirement to remove anything from your bag including laptops.
The metal detector has been replaced by a full body scanner - similar to international terminals but different technology - you just stand in the open in the designated pose - but there is no chamber or whirly thing to take the image.
Definitely teething issues (most people set off the body scanner but had nothing) - feels very much like international screening, or a US TSA checkpoint. I guess it’s the way of the future.
