Hi all :)

Newbie here but a frequent flyer who will be rejoining the skys again very soon.

I'm looking at refreshing my carry on luggage to a hard case. Currently looking at the Qantas branded hard cases but just wondering if anyone has any feedback / suggestions? Probably looking at around $120 mark (obviously in this field a $120 price tag is usually a RRP reduced from $250 haha)

Thanks!
Andy

I was after a bag to add to the carry one hard case and ended up buying

PACSAFE GO CARRY-ON BACKPACK 34L

It is great - has a sleeve to pop over the case, is lockable and opens up like a suitcase. On the way back from Norway a while back I checked it in with the case as well as I had some shopping in another bag and wanted to cut down what I was schlepping around.
This is the Bags to Go site but available lots of places and I didn't buy there.

Looking at 2 new suitcases as we only buy cheap ones they only last a few years and then we replace.

Annoyingly, it seems sizes have slightly changed to be either a bit too small for us, or slightly over the max total dimensions for most airlines of 158cms coming in at 160cm.

Thoughts ?

Just thought I'd check to see if anyone had recommendations for quality, inexpensive luggage. In other words, I don't want a luggage that will last me for decades like a Rimowa or TravelPro but I want one where I know the wheels and handles will last a few years. I see that the department stores (Myer, Alan Jones) and online retailers (Amazon) have sales on luggage from well known brands like Samsonite and American Tourister. Are they any good?

Are there any deals worth considering now given that it's Black Friday?

My recent purchases have been American Tourister, which is basically Samsonite.

Heaps of black Friday deals, but they always seem to have 30-50% off all year.

I have a few Antler bags and they have been OK as well and I prefer them over Samsonite as the last 2 bags I've had, from Samsonite, had zips which wouldn't always close when full.

Both bags fully replaced under warranty, but still a pain

I'm still on the fence about getting 160cm bags which is larger than airlines "allow"

Looking to get Samsonite - anyone have recommendations?
I have a few Cosmolite Spinners - another Tee handle was broken on a 55cm spinner a few months ago and QF don't cover them, Samsonite sent me another one (last one was 2 years ago) for free knowing its 2 years out of the 10 year warranty

The model I have is before the smallest case in the range had a top handle, the handlers pull the Tee handle out one click to grab it from the end instead of the side and don't push it back in so it sticks out and gets smashed - new models would not have this issue

If a clam shell case with 4 wheels works for you, I cannot recommend them highly enough from my experience

Received an email from Antler today touting it's lightweight soft side Soft Stripe 2.0 luggage. As an example the large 81cm suitcase weighs 2.7kg and has a volume 105L-122L.

Anyone had good or bad experience with Antler spinner wheels?
I have an older version, but it looks identical to the new ones. Very happy with it. One small issue I've had recently is the little fabric strap attached to one of the zippers broke off. I emailed their customer service team, and was provided with a list of service centres. Just one in NSW, and it's in Mascot, which would be a 60 minute trip for me. I've pushed back on this, and requested alternative options. Waiting to hear back.

Good luck. I think their main office is @ Belrose 3minutes up the road from where I live. I'd be a bit peed off too having to drive out to Mascot. Maybe a call to the Belrose office would elicit a compromise.

Interesting Antler offer discounts to airline staff and essential workers.

Went to Luggage Direct yesterday. Was interested in their 69L Volair Zurich hard-sided. It appears to have many positive features. Being an AFFer, when I came home to do my research, was slightly disappointed to find that Volair seems to be a Luggage Direct brand or only stocked by them. Interested in people’s experiences and also with the American Tourister Curio 2.

I am considering HLO for a 5 week overseas trip, all in US and Europe summer. Whilst I would normally never do this, I recently fractured my foot and it will (hopefully and praying) be ok by the time I go away (it will be 8 weeks post fall on my first day away) I am thinking that HLO will reduce risk of carrying a heavy suitcase Any recommendations on the lightest possible bag that will fit the most in. Part of the thinking is that I can buy some cheap dresses whilst I am away as my foot gets stronger so will need to room to grow the suitcase as I am away. Any thoughts?

Agree with the request: have been thinking along similar lines although not sure whether I can fit all I want into HLO. I am going to do a trial run on a shorter trip with s other and see whether it will work or not. He can carry any excess if it doesnt work :)

I also have a lightweight, foldable back pack for essentials which I use for trips with transits and which folds very easily into a suitcase. It can also be used on the trip home for dress purchases,.

The key, in my (and Mrs. NM) experience is ensuring your roll-aboard bag and "personal" piece can be "connected" for easy transport.

For last year's NM's 3-week USA trip, I convinces Mrs NM to go HLO and bought he new carry-on bags for the journey. We bought:

  • American Toiurister AppLite 4E (earn 4 QFF points per $ with Qantas Shopping)
  • July Everyday Tote (had a nice 2-tone option when we bought it)

The July Tote slips over the roll-abourd handle for easy travel. The July tote was large enough for her to keep her regular handbag inside for airport transit (hence two carry-on pieces), and then just took her handbag when sightseeing/shopping/visiting on non-flying days. Works very well for her.

I had a similar sizes roll-aboard (Samsonite I already owned) and a back-pack (also Samsonite). This is typically what I also use for domestic trips.
