Premier Barry O'Farrell is expected to have his cabinet approve a West Connex Freeway to run from Auburn through Glebe to the airport as early as this week when he receives the 20-year Strategy of Infrastructure NSW.
Government sources said that with Infrastructure NSW bosses Nick Greiner and Paul Broad due to release their report on Wednesday, cabinet would consider it this week and was likely to announce immediately the government was going ahead with at least two projects.
The Daily Telegraph revealed a fortnight ago that INSW is expected to recommend that the two projects which the government should build in the next five years are the West Connex Freeway - which is a mix between the M5 duplication and the M4 East - and the F3 to M2.

So this proposed West Connex (what an awful name!) would take the M4, extend it through to Glebe (M4 East) and then feed into the Eastern Distributor to the airport and connect to the M5 East?

Looks like this is a go-er now, I like the idea of tunneling under Parramatta Road. Well not the disruption it will cause but it should be super fast to travel on and will be great to see the roads around the inner-west suburbs returned to residents!

My problems is that at my age I don't think I will ever see it, but they definitely need something. Sydney traffic is horrendous.

Unsure about the freeway plan - would prefer if they also buried a buslane/ public transport.

but I am glad about the rejection of the George St tramline, with the alternate suggestion of a Brisbane style underground busway through the city.
Much greater capacity, and enables the buses to then continue on into the suburbs, without forcing a change of mode on people.

In my opinion the West Connex announcement is a poor solution (and on face value a pretty expensive waste of money).

The biggest issue for Sydney drivers is the end of the M4 at Strathfield and near the airport tunnel on the M5, and connecting those two is pretty useless given that the bottle necks are caused primarily by traffic heading "into" the City - and not by cars wanting to cross-city from M4 to M5 or vice versa.

The M4 would have much benefited from a purpose built M4 East which connects at Strathfield and all the way to at least the City West Link that then connects to the Cross City Tunnel, Eastern Distributor or Sydney Harbour Bridge. But this option would have been political suicide for any government given the areas that will be affected, say Haberfield, Lilyfield, Rozelle and so on are extremely oppositional of a M4 East.

The M5 would have benefited more by adding an additional lane - yes that gets expensive - but when vehicles are forced to merge to two lanes it creates relatively slow areas thus causing jams. If for example the M5 airport tunnel was increased to three lanes each way, then they could also operate variable lane directions during peak periods eg. during the morning rush, four lanes would go to the City and in the afternoon peak, they could use four lanes going out of the City.

If the M4 East created properly, then drivers could elect to go all the way east, then connect to the CCT, then ED where infrastructure is already there. There would be no need for a fancy M4 to M5 new freeway. And FWIW around Hurstville, Beverley Hills .... drivers can connect from M4 (at Silverwater) all the way to M5 via King Georges Road. Anyone who has driven on this route before will note that traffic in that direction is not a huge issue at all compared to the jams heading into the City.

I thought the West Connecx plan as I read it was extending the M4 East, to effectively hook up with the Wattle St / City West Link diversion to get traffic thru to the city, as well as continuing on to the airport.
Getting traffic not wanting to go to the CBD out of the CBD is a good thing.

I have no faith in big infrastructure projects. I wish more public transport investment, be brave politicians and do something grand that will shift our reliance on cars.

Nah! don't see most of it happening. i live 100m from the corner of Parramatta Rd and Liverpool Rd intersection, and they're not even scaring me yet. won't happen in my life time i'm sure. they have all threatened something like this for 15years, and they are still arguing about it
