Troubles in Noumea

So here we are back in Noumea, on day nine of ten. The local Kanaks have been very unhappy

Yesterday while driving home from the Dumbea river swimming spot (Le Trou Des Nurses) local drivers were a lot more ... aggressive to us on the road. Heading back down the main expressway into the centre of Noumea, lots of people were burning up rubbish and whatever they could find on the side of the road, and also waving sticks at cars driving past. Quite dangerous for the protestors really. They were setting looted car wheels on fire and rolling them down the motorway.

So we just sped up and head over to our next stop which was to try and look at the cannons past the university, big mistake there. The car copped a few flag poles as we drove through the melee out and back.

Rest of the night in the hotel room; and the town was a lot quieter.
Wake up this morning, old mate at reception tells me not to leave Anse Vata or Citron Bay, and there's a curfew tonight. First world problem, but the bakery down the street was closed and the airport, etc., is also closed.

Hopefully the airport re-opens tomorrow. We've been told to ... drive faster to the airport if something happens on the road tomorrow and report to the gendarmes that will be posted there. Interesting times ahead. Hopefully the situation can be sorted out, however over the long term I doubt it.

Not going into the pros and cons of the politics, but I'm hearing Air Calin have stopped services for 2 days and the airport is closed due to political unrest on the island.
We are booked over there in October, so not fussed at present.
I believe there is a vote in parliament today or tomorrow which is why the actions are taking place.
Nothing yet on Smart Traveler.

The question is whether Australians travelling on those Aircalin flights are eligible for EU261 or not.

Goodness - we did a cruise to Noumea in February '23, what has been going on to create this sort of behaviour?

Review the NZ Herald link in my original post. It's not all baguettes and sunshine in New Caledonia, plenty of troubles that date back to original colonisation.

Would a Strayan flying Qantas metal/ticket to France be eligible?
If no, answer to your question is no. :)
If yes ... OMFG the treatises & clauses & exceptions relating to overseas territories/collectives do my head in ...

There is a vote today or tomorrow in parliament I believe, which is what has bought all this on.
We are booked there in October for our 3rd trip, and no plans at this time to change anything.
When we were there late last year, we talked a lot about "french rule" and everyone, and I mean everyone, wanted to stay with the French. Most of them cited Vanuatu as the reason why they wanted to stay French!!!!

I should point out that New Caledonia is not considered to be metropolitan France. So quite many EU things don't apply.

And, I have a trip booked there within the next 2 weeks!

So two things here...

1. EU261 doesn't apply to New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna and a few others due to their special member territory status.
2. Riots closing an airport are considered an exceptional circumstance so also wouldn't be eligible for anything beyond duty of care rebooking.

Air Calin is usually quite good at refunds so I'd imagine those booked in the next few days during the cancellations would be eligible for a refund but those in the coming weeks probably not.

Watched the local news earlier this evening, I think they said that CRS 8 (very heavy police) is coming to Noumea. If so, things should get back to normal soon.

Anyhow, QF rebooked us on Friday's flight home.

Thanks - that probably means it flew half way around the world, or more…
Yes... Via YVR. There's mention of the reinforcements in:
