I did the bucket list thing and spent 60,000 points to upgrade from J to F MEL to LHR on the A380. Now I travel Y every week on the long haul between MEL and ADL and only do one international trip a year and have only done PE for the past few trips so J was going to be a step up.

And so, on to the flight. I already had F lounge access so no advantage there and also had a slight headache which seemed not to be helped by the widow Cliquot. The MEL-SIN leg was good, I had the tasting menu and all the wines etc and enjoyed the space but I kept wondering whether I had done the right thing. Although everything was faultless I was a little underwhelmed.

In SIN the crew changed (who knew we had so many coughneys in Oz) and I was wondering if the experience would redeem itself. The short answer is yes. If you've never slept on a plane because you are 189cm and weigh over 130kgs then this is for you. I skipped on the PJs - awful colour, J seems better. The bed was great and certainly made a huge difference given my first leg was 36.5 hours door to door. The second leg I fly BA J LHR-JHB and the ended with J on QF JHB-MEL.

I thought that sloping J bed in QF was possibly the least comfortable bed I have ever slept on, but then I remembered the alternatives....So the moral of the story is that F ruins the travel experience in all the other classes. Sometimes ignorance is indeed bliss.

Totally agree, fantastic way to spend points, very hard to go back once you've experienced F A380 style :D

I got to the last sentence thinking that you hated the whole experience??????

Oh dear - I am flying my first F flight to SIN next week. Hope I don't get hooked!

I really like the F pj's.......the J has never done it for me.

Agree - do everything to avoid skybed MkI.

It's on my bucket list for 2014, probably via Dubai now and will realistically be a once off so I'll take it on that basis.

Me too, but not to the extent where I'll deplane for not having my size.

First is indeed highly corruptible. I cannot fathom any other mode of long haul travel nowadays.

First is not suitable to everyone.

I am much better off in economy and I will leave the pyjamas and champagne for those less fortunate than me....

I kind of know the feeling...back in those days when I used to only fly LCCs and someone gave invited me to the Qantas club before my first trip on QF in y. What an experience that was!!! Inorder to prep yourself before your next 'dreaded' J trip. Invest in a trip on Tiger:D

So what is the Qantas Club like?

Once you'vehad "F" (in 380) you'll never want to go back!!!!!!!

Bring on the Emirates tie up, QF (F 380) is so disappointing without a shower on board

Tisk Tisk

I guess I might be a bit of an odd one out. While having never been in F, I've been in J every now and then, including the much famed Cirrus seat on CX, and I still have no issues with travelling in Y on JQ. Perhaps I'm just more interested in simply getting on to a plane, be it with or without luxury.

You are not the odd one out.

Except for the JQ part though.... ;)

I have difficulties understanding the "Once you have been in First Class you will never go back". My goal is to have as many trips as possible while spending as little as possible and I can easily travel economy. If only I could go Air Asia or similar there and back I would save a lot more and be able to plan more trips....

Done Air Asia once, done JS once, never again, I'm not cut out for LCC's.

Well said Barondupon. I had my first F experience this year on a 747 which was lightly loaded both legs. Now rather than flying J I'm looking at flying F to LAX in the A380. I just hope I can cope with a full F cabin , it was so nice having my private plane last time. :p
