Honestly silver is not a huge deal.

Just call another time and another and see what you get. As others have said it isn't that big a deal.
It can be a big deal depending on what you want to achieve from a frequent flyer program.

Back up a few years to my past and I would only do 3-4 flights a year internationally with hardly any domestic flying. A routing such as SYD-MEL-SIN return would earn 80SCs in economy and 4 returns a year would be enough for Silver status. Back then the status bonus was only 25% but now it is 50% and does make a difference in the number of points accrued. Here is a small comparison of points earn on 4 MEL-SIN returns a year

Bronze = 29,992 QFF points
Silver = 44,992 QFF points (including 15,000 status bonus)
Gold = 52,488 QFF points (including 22,496 status bonus)
Platinum = 59,984 QFF points (including 29,992 status bonus)

And if you then factor in priority check-in and seat selection then Silver is fairly handy status to have if that status has not cost anything extra to achieve.

P.S The numbers above for Platinum look shocking compared to the other 2 statuses. :(
